Clutch making ratcheting noise on actuation

Hi all,

My 2003 986S makes a ratcheting noise when the clutch is depressed and released (kind of like the clicking sound when you wind up a mechanical watch slowly). This only happens when the car is warmed up, and it stays that way until I let the car cool down.

The sound is not audible from inside the cabin with the windows closed, but is quite audible/loud outside of the car. Clutch performance, however, does not seem to be affected whether or not the ratcheting sound is present but of course I wouldn't know for sure.

I'm about to do some minor servicing to my car soon, so if someone has an idea of what might be the issue, I would appreciate your sharing. I might be able to take a look at it while I have the car raised.

Thanks,
- K.

My guess would be a worn throw-out bearing in the clutch

Thanks Flieger. That's what I was worried about ... my friend who owns a garage suggested the same thing, but I haven't brought it in for him to look at yet.

It's a routine replacement job of a wear item, like brake pads. It will also give you a chance to look at the condition of the dreaded REAR MAIN SEAL

You are doing the right thing to take care of your Boxster, though, and will be rewarded wil more miles of smiles and a precise clutch.

I had a 2002 986S on lease and it was a thrill to drive.
