New to Boxster's general qestions
I am no stranger to Porsche's in High school my DD was a 924s, a few years latter that turned in to a 911SC Targa which I love. I am now in college and stuck driving my parents old Minivan. For various reasons neither the 911 or the 924s can be used as my DD currently. I am in the process of selling the van and looking to replace it with a P-Car. I was looking at 944's as I love my 924s. Then I noticed that you can pick up a late 90's Boxster for almost the same price. So I have a few questions,
Why do these late 90's cars sell for the 6-8k range, is there some thing fundamentally wrong with them? (aside form high miles) What should I look for when looking in to these cars, are there any common issues that should be tended to? (Think timing belts on a 944 or Carrera chain tensioners on a 911SC) Is any one here selling there late 90's Boxster in the PA,NY,NJ,CT,MD area? Regards Dave

cheap cars but expensive maintenance. look for metal in the oil filter (failing intermediate shaft bearing) rattle on start-up (worn chain tensioners) excessive smoke on start-up and/or excessive vacuum on oil fill cap when running (failing air/oil separator) rough shifting and/or vibration at 3k rpm (failing engine mount) tough to get into second gear (transmission going bye bye) condenstation inside rear trunk (cooland cap fail) oil on upper engine (oil fill tube cracked) oil on heads (spark plug tubes cracked or cam covers leaking) oil on transmission (leaky rear main seal) electrics can go funky, look for oil in the coolant, the 6-speed eats cv boots, other consumables (wheel bearings, cv joints, water pump, fuel filter, spark plugs, air filter, transmission fluid, pollen filter, shocks, pads, rotors, sensors). check for over-revs (ECU can tell you this).
early boxsters were the first kick at the water-cooled flat six - bottom of the learning curve. |

Price? These are not "collector's cars" and depreciate like most automobiles?
Fundamentally wrong? No, not really. But it does have its intricacies. Just reading through these forums you'll understand. Here's a good read: Article 13. Not trying to send you to another forum, but www.986forum.com has a few nice cars for sale around your area. |
