Not necessarily, that year used halogens that looked a lot like the lits. Factory lits would tilt up and down slightly on when first turned on, they would also seem to brighten up a bit as they warm up. The light color is also different, the lits being a more intense blue-white light than the halogens.

Halogen:

Lits:

The lits also cost about twice what the halogens do, about $1200 (each) for the lits, about $640 for halogens. And unless the lits are a "post delivery" install, they should show up in the car's opiton list....

The Litronic / HID lamps take about a 1/2 second to flip on when you turn on the switch. The light is also very white. The halogens flip on immediately. Also, the halogens operate quite warm to the touch - the HIDs very cool. So, with these clues, you can probably figure it out. You can also post your VIN, and I can check the build sheets.

With respect to your headlamp problem, I would check the switch, or perhaps there's a loose ground somewhere in the system. I would probably start with the switch. Here's an article on replacing it: Pelican Technical Article: Boxster Headlamp Switch Replacement - 986 / 987

Hmm, I just re-read your post. I think I was thinking of someone else with a turning on problem.

Another clue I read somewhere is that almost all HID cars have washers which are a little chrome thingy right in front of the headlights (that yours does not have). C.

For future reference, I believe that Litronic headlights are option code 601.
