Throttle Issue

Hello All,

Former owner of 87 targa and wish I would not have sold it...another in the future, perhaps.

Anyway, to the point, I volunteered my "services" to track a possible throttle issue with a 2000 986 with Egas. The dash shows CEL-P1501 using an off the shelf code reader.

symptoms: car starts with unstable idle from 500-1100rpm. Additionally, the rpms will not go above 2K when pushing the accelerator. Clear the code and the idle returns to a stable 800rpm on the nose and car revs up and down without incident. Once the car is turned off, issues resume.

My research has pointed to the throttle position sensor, but I have no idea where it is. I do know it is not located on the throttle body in the engine compartments. Can anyone please offer any insight/suggestions, etc...I do love Porsche motors and I'd like to be the good guy on this one!

The sensor is located by the throttle pedal, part number 996 606 115 01...the bad news is a new one is $800. Check the item in the Pelican catalog.

Hmm, there is no "throttle position sensor" per se - the 2000 Boxster has an electronic throttle, so it knows where the gas pedal is pushed from your foot. You can use the Durametric tool, I believe, to grab the readings from the pedal. But that would not affect the idle.

I'm guessing that it would be your mass airflow sensor (MAF)...

I certainly wouldn't question you, Wayne...I picked the part number off the PET. My '02 is e-gas, as well and shows a pedal position sensor and entered the part number in your catalog?

I appreciate the feedback-I will do a little more digging and see what I come up with between the MAF and throttle pedal.

Recently read a post on a forum (rennlist 996 I think) where someone removed, disassembled, & reassembled their tps @ the gas pedal. Search around it was a good DIY.
