Wiring AVIC z130bt

I have been reading Wayne's excellent book - 101 projects and decided to tackle an aftermarket head unit install...

Currently I have my Boxster S 987 2005 dismantled to fit the head unit.
I chose a Pioneer AVIC z130bt and have bought a MOST HUR kit to patch it into the Bose system.
The unit has a navigation and rear back up camera.
I am trying to figure out how to route these wires without drilling too many holes.
Likely I will install the navigation sensor outside the car and probably in the right side space between the cabin air filter and the hoses in the midline. Here it will be protected by the plastic panel in front of the windshield but be behind the hood. Any thoughts?
I note that my car has a large wiring harness coming through the bulkhead on the right side and a grommet in the corresponding spot on the left. Would it be reasonable to pass the wire to the cabin through the blank grommet here?.
The rear backup camera will fit in the recess for the license plate. How can I access this area? Will I need to remove the bumper or can I feed the wire through the lens socket
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Dave Turner

You may want to check Renntech. There are some good DIY tutorials in there that will help with most of your questions. You will have to register and probably become a supporting member to access the tutorials.

Good luck with your install.

Hi,

I installed an AVIC 700BT in my 2002 Boxster, so all my answers are based on my car, but should be close enough:

a) placement of the navigation receiver:
Yes the place between the battery and the cabin air filter is a very good place

b) routing of the cable:
I punched a small hole into the rubber grommet in the firewall behind the steering column and routed the cable through there

c) rear backup (and here the 986 and 987 might actually be too different)
I took the license plate off, extended the rear wing and was somehow able to route the cable for the rear view camera along the rubber lip for the trunk towards the front of the car. I "stole" the 12V for the cable which needs power when backing up from the backup light and also routed it from the trunk to the front together with the camera cable

more details can be found here: http://986forum.com/forums/general-discussions/19599-avic-f700bt-installed.html

Thanks for the suggestions.
I will put the GPS receiver near the pollen filter - thats not too much of a problem as long as I can route the wire through the bulkhead.
I will tackle the backup camera tomorrow -that'll be more of a problem.
Any thoughts about the iPod input? Thought it could go either in the glove compartment or in the recess below the heat / AC controls.

About the iPod cable:
Mine is in the center cubby (armrest)
I like that it's stealthy and you control the iPod via the head unit anyways, it will take 1 ~ 2 hours to get the center console off, route the cables, drill a hole and put everything back together. Since my car is a MY 2002, there was actually no other (stealth) place to put it

And one more thought: As long as you make all connectors from the head unit to the backup camera easily accessible so that you don't have to pull out the head unit anymore, you can tackle the backup camera another day...
