Vario Cam Solenoid replacement
Hi guys, just a quick question... looking to replace a variacam solenoid on my 99 boxster 2.5L (damn that solenoid is expensive). Wondering before I start if this is a procedure that can be done without removing the engine... Its a little tight, but is it possible? has anyone done it?
My car has about 98K miles on it. If I am going to have to remove the engine, I'm probably going to go to an indy. At this point the question would be... since the engine is out, might as well get other stuff done on it while its out right? -Variacam Solenoid -Variacam tensioners -IMS bearing -Clutch what else is recommended? Thanks, D. |

Can definitely be done in the car, it is tight, but do-able, I just re-sealed both my cam covers with the engine in the car, and put new tensioner ramps in whilst I was there. The porsche manual says that you should only change the solenoid with the tensioner horizontal, i.e. not when fitted to the car, so I removed the tensioner/cam unit and did it on the bench, pretty easy job.
If you do end up taking the engine out though I'd add RMS seal to your list. Last edited by msol644; 04-20-2012 at 11:33 PM.. |

Yes, it is accessible, if a little tight at times...
