Pls take a look at my used paper filter...IMS bearing problem????

Just got a 02 boxster with 130k miles...this is my first oil change...............well...should I be worried?

How much will the IMS bearing job cost? (parts + labor)

And how much will the labor of engine swap cost????

JESUS HELP ME>>>>

:confused::confused::(:(

Depends upon the metal flakes, if they are ferrous (can be picked up with a magnet), you could have an issue. There will always be some crap in the filter at oil change time, but if it is not ferrous, it is just normal wear.

Welcome SmileWavy What language is on the newspaper? If the pieces do not stick to a magnet then no worries. Plus, there is more than just the IMS bearing that is ferrous metal that wears out.

They look pretty small too. My 996 that was about to take an IMS dump at 30K had much bigger flakes. Check out my article for pictures of what I found...

have an oil analysis done just to see where you stand.

I'm not suggesting you wait but I found a few flakes like yours (not quite as many) at my first change at 34k (not the first change for the car). I've changed twice since then and found nothing. Last one was recent at 61k and very clean. Now I'm finding just a couple black plastic chunks and 1 or 2 yellow ones. C.

I have been reviewing posts about metal bits in the oil filter on all the Porsche forums. I would guess that very few people actually open their oil filters and check for metal bits. In fact, my local Porsche dealer service department claims they do not open the filters.
I would bet if all filters were opened at oil change there would be a pretty high percentage of motors that spew out little bits like this and chug along happily for many thousands of miles until.............

They certainly don't make them like they used to!

I have had a '72 911T, an '83 911SC, and a '99 996 in addition to a Boxster and now a Cayman S. I have loved them all but the new ones (water cooled) just are not the same.
