Misfire pop at exhaust following Air-Oil Separator repair

My 2005 base 987 had an air-oil separator failure 2 weeks ago. I happened in my garage. The smoke cleared, so I drove it a couple of test miles, and when smoking returned, I turned around and parked. I read my 101 Projects for the Boxster, and started the new part installation, got stuck on the lower hose removal, so had it towed to my mechanics shop to finish the new AOS install along with new plugs. Smoking stopped, but it had less than full power on highway acceleration. I put some Techron fuel cleaner in and assumed I needed a couple of hundred miles to burn off oil that entered the system.
After 2 days driving, it seems even more acceleration restricted, and has had a couple of misfire pops from the exhaust when pulling out of the parking space or from a light.
What gives?

Check the plastic line going from the AOS into the manifold side and make sure it is tight. On both ends.

I left that tube loose when I changed the AOS. And it popped, back fired and made all kinds of ugly noises.
