No alarm sound
 

My 2001 Boxter S....When the alarm is triggered only the lights flash. Does the alarm sound through the horn or does it have its own speaker? It has not worked ever since I got the car so I have no idea.

I'm not sure what does what or how that works. Mine doesn't do anything either. But I don't care. I sold car alarms for 13 years and quite frankly. They are not very effective. How may times have you driven through a parking lot and hear an alarm going off and even looked to see what car it is. If it goes off in the driveway in front of your house. Are you really going to run out in the middle of the night and confront who ever made it go off. Can you say, thief with gun goes bang. Screw it. That is why I have insurance. I don't even lock the thing at night. I just make sure their is nothing in it to tempt the idiot thieves. If the want in it? They're going to get in it. Sharp knife through rough will take care of that. As far as stealing it. Crap the ignition in the thing is so complicated. Good luck with that. I'm sure someone knows how. But they are way more likely to steal a Ford 150. Much more nondescript and easier to unload. The best way to prevent it from getting stolen is have someone put a kill switch on the fuel pump that is hidden.

In answer to your question, "no"... there is no beep, at least in my 2008 S. The only time you will hear a beep is if something is not set right - if a door or lid is open, etc. It is to signal you that there is some aspect of the alarm system that is not armed correctly There will be no sound when the alarm is set and working.

After setting it, you should see the blinking red light on the center console door lock button, blinking, if it is armed correctly. That's how mine works.

No Beeps... Just light. but I think if you click it twice you get a beep or two?

are you talking about locking and unlocking the car?
or when the system is armed and you trigger it?

if you are talking about the lock/unlock, so that's the way it should be.
if you are talking about triggering the system, then the horn should sound as well.
the horn for the alarm is separate then the horn of the steering wheel.
the horn for the alarm is located next to the battery of the car.

maybe i should develop a siren that sound a beep when locking and unlocking the car.
what do you guys think?
will you be interested in a siren that sound two beeps (lets say) when locking, and one when unlocking?

Personally, I like it quiet. I just glance back and make sure the lights flash, telling me the alarm is set. I have 2 Toyotas that both squeak at me when armed - I don't really like it. Just my opinion though!

Well the main reason I need to hear it is because it has gone off for no reason a few times and I have been fortunate enough to be awake and see the lights going off. Im afraid it is going to false alarm some night and me not catch it because I cant hear it and it will run the battery dead. Where I live I am not too worried about someone stealing it but I dont like leaving it unlocked either.

Trace, Not going to try to persuade you into my way of thinking. But it should turn off after a specified amount of time automatically, if it does false. Most cars do anyway.

in that case, the alarm horn will be a good place to start.
disconnect the horn and use a volt meter to check if you have 12V between the two wires when the alarm is triggered

Yes it has 12.5-13V...However it also has 10.25V constant without the alarm set or with it set and not tripped. I pulled the horn and did a ohms test on it. There is 127 ohms between the terminals and no continuity from either terminal to the casing, which tells me there is not a short to the casing. Question is.... Should there be resistance between the terminals and how much.....or should it have continuity between the terminals? I have no idea about horns. I would expect there to be a winding of some kind inside, which should show some kind of resistance if I am correct in my thinking.

Which terminals did you test. The one's to the alarm horn or the ones to the other end? A short is zero ohms. No resistance. If you tested the other end? It's probably fine. You're measuring the resistance of the wire and the thing that triggers it. A horn is basically a speaker. Another way to test the horn is just put a 9v battery on leads to it. It may be weak sounding. But it should make some sort of sound.
