Cool Exhaust question

I know our stock systems are just one box or muffler at the back, but I have never opened one up to see if the exhaust gases from each bank of our engines actually mix.
Could anyone tell me what the idea is of joining the two separate back boxes in some after market SS exhaust systems. Is it for performance, sound or some other reason.

I'm not certain I fully understand your question and what series of Boxster are you talking about? The early base Boxster has a single muffler that has baffles in it that route the exhaust gases from each side through a series of baffles and out the tail pipe. I'm not certain if the gases are mixed or kept apart by the baffles as I've never seen one opened up. I do know that if you torch a hole through the first baffle the gases hit when entering the muffler the gases bypass all the other baffles and that improves sound and a little performance.
