Hi,

Presently own '99 Miata with 68k; no issues. Found a '99 boxter with 29k.
It's pretty, seems to drive ok, price not too bad.
I'm tempted but frankly scared of buying car with hidden engine and
reputation for lots of problems.
Maybe I should stick with what I know?

I wouldn't necessarily say that Boxster engines are more or less reliable than Miata engines. However, they are significantly more expensive to replace with something goes wrong with them. If you follow the standard upgrades for the Boxster engine, like replacing the intermediate shaft bearing, and keeping your oil change intervals to about 3000 miles or so, then you should be okay. The good news is that the Boxster's are getting cheaper and cheaper every day, and they are a really huge bang for the buck these days, even when you consider the risk of having engine problems occur in the future. Plus they are really fun cars to drive.
