986 Boxster S instrument cluster not working
 

I have got a problem with 986 Boxster S instrument cluster not working properly;
- the analog speedo and rev counter do not move, both gauges do not move at all
- mileage, etc. on the lcd screen at the bottom of speedo do not illuminate

All other instruments function normally; fuel gauge, indicators, etc. all ok.

I connected with Durametric, and I checked the following
- engine rpm shows (i.e., rpm signal comes from engine dme)
- in the activations menu, I can activate;
rpm --->8000 ok
speedometer ---> full speed ok

However, I cannot activate lcd screen all pixels, the lcd part stays entirely dark, nothing shows.

Please any ideas where to start diagnostics?

I have a little experience with the clusters based on swapping a Carrera cluster into my car. I prepared a document with some notes and pictures. If you send me a PM with your e-mail address, I'll forward it to you.

I don't have any experience with the problem you are experiencing. Have you removed the cluster for any reason such as to replace a light bulb? If you removed it, perhaps you did not seat one of the connectors correctly when you reinstalled it. If this sounds like a possibility, I suggest you remove and reinstall it. If it was just one lcd not illuminating, I would suspect a failed bulb, but it seems like a big coincidence that all of them would burn out at the same time. Perhaps there is a fuse that powers part of the cluster that is out. I think you need to check B1, B10 (both 15 amp), and E1 (7.5 amp). However, since you have a car built for Sweden your fuse layout may be different. So check the chart under your fuse cover.

Another remote possibility is a fault with your ignition switch.

Was this problem ever resolved? I have almost exactly the same problem at the moment with my 986.

Mr rev counter is completely erratic and has a mind of its own. I have been told the coil packs breaking down could cause this, any hep would be appreciated. Dean

Sorry I should have said its a 2000 996 Boxster 2.7 And the car runs fine no issues and the OBD has no faults found...
