Boxster idle

Hi
I have a 2.5 1999 Boxster.
Occasionally on starting (not first start of the day) the revs shoot up to say 1500 and will drop back to 200 or stall. it will do this for consecutive starts unless it is held up with the throttle or driven immediately.
Any suggestions
Thanks

First and most obvious suggestion, is to check to see if there are any fault codes. Post those if any and go from there. To many things could be causing this issue to take shots in the dark. Just IMHO

Thanks,
I'm new at this. I've seen mention of this. do I have to go to a dealer? or a general workshop? Or is there a reader I can buy? Cheers

The Durimetric reader is the most common among Porsche owners. Just search for Durametric and info will appear. A regular code reader may give you some ideas as well.

The 99 uses a throttle cable, on the side of the throttle body is an idle control valve actuator thing, they are prone to getting gummed up, pop it out, clean it up with some brake cleaner. .. reinstall. ..... fixed.
The 2000 and later cars use e throttle and don't require this piece.
Pretty common, early 996s share the same part. ...
