The Boxster is truly one of the great sports cars. 97-2014 offer a lot of bang for the buck. All cars have warts so without a budget or specific wants, I'd say the same advice for any car. Buy one with a documented service record that was driven and cared for. Garage queens, neglected cars, or cars beaten to death are less interesting.
If it is a 2001-2005, know if the IMS bearing has been replaced as this was a weak point especially in these years. Extra value for cars that had oil changes every 5k or less. 2009 to present look like a significant reliability design improvement but time will tell if this is true or not. Mine is a 1998 with 110k, 80+ track days and still runs like new. Good luck!

Would suggest you go to the 986 forum and look up "Thinking of buying a Boxster". There's reams of info there. I have a 2001 Boxster base that has given me little trouble in almost 3 years of ownership. There is no such thing as a cheap Boxster. You pay now or pay later and you can't run a Boxster for the same cost of running a Miata. Enjoy the search.
