My left headlight and taillight went out tonight at the same time. I checked the bulbs in each and they are fine. Question 1: does the switch effect the tail lights too? Q2: would a bad switch only effect one side of the car or do I have another issue?

Because the switch could be failing internally and mechanically it is hard to say whether or not the taillights will be affected. You can usually aggravate the headlight switch by turning the switch slightly to the left or right and you'll see the lights go out. This is the test I use to determine when a switch is bad. Also it may not act up until you have been using the headlights for 30 minutes or so, so be patient in your diagnosis. I think you're on the right track focus on the switch.
