I have a 2008 Boxster S limited edition 3.4l. From what Ive read here in this terrific writeup is ... this year and engine has an irreplaceable ims bearing ... it is subject to failure but based on shop experience there are few failures .. my only remedy is 5k mile oil changes and maybe clean the sump pan every 5k?. Yay or nay on a super magnet on the filter or pan?

A magnet will catch debris from the bearing, but not stop bearing failure. 5k oil changes are a good idea. 2008 should still be serviceable, that is the last year you can get to it.

A 2008 is not serviceable; in fact, any car with an engine built between 2006 and the switch to the 9A1 engine in 2009 uses the oversized non serviceable baring that requires an engine tear down to replace.
