Need help with replacement top

2000 Boxster

I am replacing the soft top and I have run into an issue. When I close the top, the side tension cables on both sides tend to over lap the B pillar post behind the window. When it does this the top will not close completely. If I have someone force them behind the B pillar while I am lower the top then it fits normally and the top closes all the way.

Am I correct, that the cables should go behind the B pillar completely? Or should it overlap it and remain on the outside? Any ideas of what is going on here and how to fix the issue?
Thanks
Rick

there are elastic straps that have to be adjusted to 85 mm. that's the distance from the screw point to the point were the stitching is on the elastic to vinyl piece. if the elastic piece is old or has lost its elasticity then you need to go to fabric store and buy a new piece and replace the worn out piece... ooops that applies to a 987..... check to make sure the same dimension is true for an earlier car......... bob

Do a search... you can just put a small screw in there to stop it.

Are you guys talking about the elastic strap that is stitched into the new top? There is a hole in the end of it and that is the hole that I used to attach it the cross bar. So you are saying to place a hole further up the elastic strip , thus pulling more on the top?

Thank you for the help.

Ok , I found my mistakes. I failed to loop the elastic strap around the round metal down tube on both sides. And I had the Finger spring (leaf springs) under the fingers on the slides and they should have been over the top of them. They were not doing their job .... until I relocated them.

It works as expected now.

Thanks
Rick

sorry... my experience is with the 2005 boxster... your top needs to go behind what you call the b pillar of the top... on my 2005 I had the same problem you are having... it was resolved by sewing a new elastic piece, and making the factory adjustment of 85 mm. that proper tension will hold the top so that it closes behind the window frame.... I am suggesting that your strap is not tense enough. If the elastic is new as you suggest, a new top.... you should look for the proper adjustment length... I found mine in the work shop manual... If that means making a new hole in the new elastic strap , so be it....

You saved big putting this in yourself! They want $500 to R & R in the Phoenix area. Not including the new top.
