Hi looking at an 06 Boxster S 3.2 in Canberra Aus with 76K Kms, from you informative post it seems the 3.2 is less likly to split liners ect, but not sure if it has the concealed IMS or not, in one of your articles you say that the IMS problem was almost unheard of in the 06-08 range, when exactly was the non serviceable item installed.

Do third generation IMS bearings fail. Yes. Any moving part can and eventually does.

In numbers like the much publicized second generation? No. Maybe 10% as frequently.

Can the third generation be serviced? Yes, the seal can be removed. Or the entire shaft can be replaced using a better bearing but it requires a case split which is lots of parts and labor money.

There is now also another pathway for the third generation shaft: LN makes a spacer kit that presses into the third generation shaft, allowing it to accept any of the earlier LN hybrid or Solution kits.
