Automatic Transmission Shot?

Hi, I have a 2001 Boxster w/ auto Tiptronic transmission. When I start the car, it goes into gear fine. After it warms up for a few minutes, it slips out of gear and won't re-engage. After I switch off the ignition for about 30-60 seconds, and turn the car back on, the transmission re-engages and works just fine for a few minutes. I have been told by some that I need a new transmission, others think it might be electronic. Anyone had this issue? Thanks.

Has a dealer or indy looked at it? Just curious who says you need a new transmission? It sounds like the oil warms up and that is when the problem starts. Curious how many miles do you have on the car and when was the last time the transmission oil and filter were changed?

Automatic Transmission Shot?

Thank you for the replies. Bought the car about 1 1/2 years ago with 95k miles, so don't know if the fluid's ever been changed. Has about 110k miles on it now. Had an indy mechanic look at it who said it needed a new trans. Just seems odd that it works of for a couple of blocks by simply turning off the car for a minute or so. Any additional thoughts are welcome. Thanks!!

Drain the fluid and have a look. If the color is ugly and it is full of sparkles you are probably done. If the fluid looks reasonably clean, change the filter and try fresh fluid before going shopping for another one.

Are there any codes present for the transmission?

The 90k miles is the service that the transmission fluid is supposed to be changed. Any record of that being done?
