Toronto here too. Not an owner yet, though.

I'm shopping for the 'right' 80's Carrera - south of the border where the pickin's are more plentiful & cheaper. A coupe or cab for a weekend toy.

Ian. If you need info on the current trick of importing into Canada, contact me. I just brought my 83 911SC over in January. It was a breeze.
Thanks ....................... Randy randyrap@cogeco.ca

Randy

Thanks for the offer. I've done the research:

72 hr US check
15 yr old thing
20yr duty free
GST & PST & Aircon Tax unavoidable

Trying to avoid state tax is my only real issue. The policy seems to vary from state to state. I intend to drive the car home btw. Some states will not waive sales tax for a drive out. Florida & Connecticut for example. If you title it (which you have to do for the border) then they whack you 6%. Of course, buying from a dealer & shipping is an option but after a $2500 USD quote from Intercity, I decided that a drive would be nicer.

Hi Ian.
Sounds like a fun ride from Florida. $2500 for shipping is excessive. I was quoted around $1300 US from California to my door. You might want to check into a few other auto shipping companies.

Last month I imported a privately purchased 83 911 SC from the US. This was the first time I had ever imported a car and it was also my first Porsche. Here are a few facts. US customs requires a copy of the car title. I had the owner fax it in and confirmed that all was well after 72 hours. Even if the deal falls through, this step is a must. Lewiston Bridge in Ontario is the only bridge that handles car transfers and it MUST be between 9 and 4 on weekdays. Next, I went with a trailer in tow and did an inspection on the car and finalized the deal with cash in hand. With the car strapped down I drove back to the border with my ''special'' receipt and the original copy of the title. At the US border I gave the title to the Customs officer and he quickly did a check on the computer and gave the title a stamp and sent me on my way. On the Canadian side, they filled out a form and made me to pay the 6.1 % duty (because the car was built in Germany) and I also had to pay the PST. The officer almost forgot about the 6.1% however a keen partner pointed it out to him. Since the car is over 20 years, I had no problems with recall notices, or speedo issues. Once in Canada the car needs to be certified and registered at the local MTO within 60 days (I think). Until then you can drive it around with no plates and the stamped US title along with the Canadain Customs form acts as your ownership.

This was one of the easiest experiences I've ever had at the border and I would not hesitate to do it again.

Hope this helps ........................................... Randy

GST and 6.1% at the Canadian Border.

You MUST stop at the US border for them to stamp the original title.

Hi Manfred. This is correct. Now when you go to the MTO, you will have to pay the PST.

Hi Manfred.

You are right about the no duty for 20+ year old cards but, that is for North American made cars. Because the Porsche is from Deutchland, there is a 6.1% duty. Some Customs Officers forget about Porsches being European cars and do not charge the 6.1%.

I'm new to this Porsche game and have been getting a lot of stuff from eBay. I also found a guy in Toronto who has many parts and has some US connections. His name is Frank 911parts@sympatico.ca . Tell him I sent you.

Randy

Thanks for the blow-by-blow account.

One biggie you have to do is declare the cash you are taking out as payment. Any amount over $10K MUST be declared.

You are right Ian. They did ask me about the cash when I crossed into the US.
