1982 SC at Toronto AutoX Sunday May 13th

Here are a few vids of my first AutoX in Ruby. I wish 1st gear was a little longer.. Had a blast though, and feel a lot more prepared for Mosport on June 2/3rd.
Will anyone else be there?

The fifth video is pretty darn funny. I lost it for a sec and scared my friend Diego.. Apologies in advance for the coarse language on his behalf.

Hey, nice vids! Don't you hate it when you hit the wipers by accident?

{in a deep voice} Nothing can prepare you for Mosport...

just kidding - it is indeed good prep for the track, though don't forget you can push your car really hard in an autoX with little consequences if you cross that line. That doesn't apply at the track, esp. Mosport!

Will June 2/3 be your first ever track day?

Yes!!! It will be the first track day on 4 wheels. Will you be there? I can't wait.. I think I broke a bushing on the rear adjustable sway yesterday.. oh well, it'll give me something to fix.

No, I can't make it that weekend, but I'll be at the BRG day on June 19 - I highly recommend them - check out group88.ca Drop me an email if you want more details.

First track day on 4 wheels - so you've been to the track on a bike? Man, that takes balls! I hope the 4-wheeled experience lives up to the 2 wheels. From what I've heard, track driving on a bike is a much greater rush than in a car.

UCR is a great way to ease into track driving. You don't get as much actual seat time as you do with other groups, but it's a really low-pressure, confidence-building way to introduce yourself to the track. There's lots of free time for socializing, thinking about your last run, etc. Plus you get to look at tons of great cars while you're there

Considering I've only driven Ruby in traffic in the GTA and yesterday's AutoX, I'll need all the easing in as possible. I'll check out June 19th though. Will they have instructors? I'm a bit too timid to go it alone, mostly for fear of getting in someone else's race-line.

I've been on Shannonville a bunch on my bike. There's nothing I've experienced (so far) that is as exhilarating, but I have a feeling Ruby will measure up. It's an awesome machine, and is more car than I'll ever know how to use properly.

BRG does 2 run groups - beginner and advanced. Beginner has instructors, advanced doesn't. I had 2 different instructors over the weekend, both great. But even this being my 3rd season with probably 15 days at Mosport, I'm still definitely in beginner. The advanced group is really advanced. They also have a fairly low limit on cars, so there's no worries about traffic. Half the time I was out there, it felt like I'd rented the track to myself!

Definitely don't go out alone, especially at a track like Mosport, until you're familiar with it.

tell me more about the car

the 3.6 sounds amazing

What did it cost you to buy and what are your thoughts of the reliability of the conversion?

Smile Thanks!

As far as reliability goes, it's a 1996 engine with 30k miles using same DME. The newer of the air cooled engines have hydraulic lifters too, so there are no pesky valve adjustments. Since it's OBDII, I have the software to analyze the millions of sensors with my laptop. In general, it just starts up and goes...

It was professionally installed with a kit from Steve Timmins (www.instant-g.com). He built it actually http://instant-g.com/Cars/RubySleeper/index.html

There were some idling/stalling issues at the beginning, but this was solved by getting a Steve Weiner Chipped DME.. also picked up another 7% hp apparently.

Costs:

Here's a basic breakdown of costs in 000'
Motor 9 - 12
Kit 1.5
Flywheel/Clutch 1.5
Oil cooler 1.5
Exhaust 1.5
Labour ?? (DIY)

Then, you need to beef up the suspension -- torsion bars, inserts, sways, etc. to handle double the HP the car is used to having.

Then, you need to beef up the brakes..
Then....... and so on

Yeah, I'll probably be there. I broke a bushing on the rear adj. sway, which I need to sort out, which might require some wrench time on Saturday...

I think it's time you take for me a spin in your hp monster Turbo. Did you get those brakes fixed?

New brakes.....

rotors and pads, new front wheel bearings......installed Wevo engine mounts too......(thanks to Mark Thoun for all his help with all of it!).

Car is running really well......I have tranny mounts to install next (waiting for access to a lift), new tires should be in tomorrow I hope, and I have to replace my clutch cable when I can get that lift too.....

You are welcome to drive it yourself when we can trade one day....I love the sound of your car!!!!!

Mark
