Ultimate engine sealant thread - for Canada!

I did all the reading, and sent off an order to pelican for my bottom end stuff and sealants. got a polite email that they can't send the sealants internationally. so I went down the the local napa/lordco/auto parts store to pick them up.

practically the definition of 'blank stare'. they didn't have, or had never heard of, loctite 574, curil T, or anything to do with threebond.

can you guys who've done engines please post what you used that's available in canada. apparently loctite is permatex here but the product descriptions don't really match. any help much appreciated. Don.

Can they maybe just not send it by air?
I know that I got most sealants from Pelican a while back and then the Threebond items locally.

sealer

I used Loctite 515 when I done my 912 and the 911T
A helicopter mechanic told me about it. Hughs Helicopter uses this product to seal their engines.
My 912 has now 15 000 km and not a drop, the 911 engine is waiting to be installed.

He also uses a 00 size silk tread between the engine half's to form a gasket, including the 515.
00 size thread does not change tolerances.

When I did mine a few years back i got threebond from the local honda motorcyle dealer, blue and red loctite from the local bearing supplier and loctite 574 from pelican shipped usps.

Porsche_monkey 10-05-2008 07:25 AM

I think Curil T is the only thing I couldn't find locally, Pelican used to mail that stuff USPS and it only takes a week or so. If not, Hylomar blue seems just as good to me, Napa sells that. (In fact Hylomar seems to do everything, it is a really good all purpose leak fixer.)

Honda motorcycle shops sell the Japanese silicones that are needed. (threebond etc).

Canadian Bearings (if you have one local) sell all the loctite products.

As an equally important point: are you planning to use the sealants Wayne suggests in his book? I would say there have been a lot of alternate opinions expressed since his book was published. Personally I would be more inclined to follow Henry Schmidt's suggestions.

I just talked to Burlington Cycle (www.burlington-cycle.com) and they can order in Threebond 1211, but not 1280B, which is what I was recommended to use for my tranny. I just sent an email to Threebond through their website.

Porsche_monkey 10-06-2008 10:21 AM

Chris: I have the Loctite flange sealant for your tranny. I'll never use it all, you can come by and borrow it. I would recommend it over threebond.

I also have Threebond 1211, and 1104. Any of those would work.

You can order Loctite 574 at industrial suppliers. It's available, they just have to look harder as it's not featured in the brochures. I bought mine at the local Canadian Bearings

Do not buy the Permatex product pretending to be Hylomar, it isn't.

Porsche_monkey 10-08-2008 11:29 AM

Hylomar is now sold at NAPA, they split from Permatex.

Real Hylomar Universal (blue) = good

Fake Permatex Hylomar = not good

Or you can just call the local loctite rep... the guy in edmonton's number is 780 437 9891 and his name is David.

haycait911 10-11-2008 08:30 PM

well guys. I found everything, one way or another. I'm going to use the HenrySchmidt/Supertec method, so here's my supplier list-

Threebond 1104 - honda motorcycle dealer, now 1194 ( lead-free). also saw it at the yamaha dealer with a 'yamabond' sticker on it for more than twice the money.

Threebond 1211 - honda motorcycle dealer

Loctite 574 - Weissach in vancouver

Curil T - ordered from the local mercedes dealer as mercedes part number 0019892520, apparently it's just re-labelled for mercedes distribution. ( Uli at Wiessach put me onto this, very helpful guy.)

***NOTE*** FWIW, Pelican wouldn't send any of the sealants I ordered by mail, air or ground. maybe they would by UPS but no way am I going there!

Curil-T is also used in VW engine rebuilding and I noticed that Concept-1 VW Werks in Calgary stocks it on the shelf. 403-287-8549 www.concept1.ca

These guys seem to have a pretty good grip on the sealants available in Canada. Too bad they are down east... Copied link from another thread here.

Just an update for fellow Canadians out there: NAPA do stock Hylomar despite their computer telling them they don't! Part # is now 60052 apparently and the Edmonton warehouse has eleven tubes as of this am. Motorcycle stores still stocking Three Bond 1194.

update:

last week I ordered a new tube of threebond 1104/1194 from the local honda bike shop. picked it up today. now it's 1184 and the package indicates it's the replacement for 1104/1194. checked it tonight and it looks, feels, smells and tastes the same as 1194 so I guess it's all good.
