importing used parts

Hi, I just purchased some used parts that are being shipped to a buddies in Detroit. Either I will be going to pick them up or he will bring them here. What can I expect at the border? Taxes? duties?

Thanks, Joe

PST and GST in BC and I have been charged duty on a set of used tail lights "Hella-Made in Germany"
It doesn't happen very often but it could happen. The guy was a new trainee..lucky me.

It should be that if you declare them to be antique automobile parts, you are duty exempt. Just GST/PST/HST if they can be bothered.

Lots of times I declare the value and if under 200 to 300 they say have a nice day, sometimes go in and pay HST.
HST is just the cost of living in Canada.

I have come across with $150 worth of used parts and the border person waved me through. I did say they were for an old car.

it seems they invariable ask 'what kind of car'

at the mention of the 'P' word getting thru without paying taxes pretty much goes out the window.

Cross the border about twice a month. In the last 10 years, I never paid any "duty" new or used car parts, HST only. The car got search twice. Never cheat and declare everything. I know some people that get caught and they average 33% car search.

Complaint to the Superintendent once about a "want to be cop" attitude border guard and they send the guy on a "people skill" course.

Been wave about 20% of the time. Ogdensburg wave in at ~ $110 per person, Niagara Fall ~ $200 per person.

Yeah, I got not problem paying HST on stuff that cost half price.

http://cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/trade-commerce/tariff-tarif/2014/01-99/ch87-2014-eng.pdf

here is the link for the Tariff codes for car parts, if you do have to pay duty and that would be rare, use this, always check before you import.
car parts are not on the watch list, however wheel rims are, you always need to verify what country the parts are made in, just cause you may own a German car doesn't mean the parts were made in Germany, if you bought the parts in the US doesn't mean they are US made.
just saying...... High value shipments (HVS) are mostly checked anything over $2500, Low Value shipments (LVS) below $2500 are not, Customs looks at description that is normally what triggers an inspection.

hope this helps

My respond is always "an old car". I have never been asked any follow on questions for specific brand.

As long as you don't lie.

Most of the agents, after seeing my plate on my DD, ask me if I own a Porsche
