Vehicle licensing in Alberta
Hello all fellow Canucks!
I'm looking seriously at a used vehicle in Alberta (being sold by a private party) - my intention is to drive it home. Can anybody run down the process I need to go through at that end at the registration office? (need to allow time in my schedule for that). I know I will need my own private insurance from Ontario, that's no biggie, it's the trip home and the required transit permit that's my issue, I just don't know the hoops I will need to jump through.... When I bought my 911 in California it was extremely easy... the seller just signed the back of the pink slip and handed it over, and away I drove, plates and all.... very convenient. Thanks in advance! Jon |

Jon - as suggested call the registry office or alberta govt website.
The plates in alberta stay with the previous owner. You should be able to get an 'in transit' sticker. I think, but may be wrong, that you need to get a sticker for each province you are crossing. Signing over the pink slip works in alberta, bill of sale is better and you can get one off alberta govt website. This only matters at your end though when you go to register in ontario. And remember, For every solid western car you take east, you must take back 2 eastern cars with you

Thanks everyone for all the advice!
I ended up making a deal on the car: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/744924-old-member-new-project-obligatory-pics.html But decided against driving the car back, too many unknowns and the car is not exactly 100%, and 35 years old. So I had it shipped. Because of the damn winter we continue to have, I chose to go with enclosed transport, and chose TFX - they did a great job, easy to work with, and did door to door service. I would never ship a car any other way again. This western car was obviously never winter driven and really, really, really, clean and rust free. I feel pretty lucky - the car is exactly what I wanted, for much less than I was budgeting for a clean unmolested SC. |
