BC inspection help!
 

Well as some of you would have been through, its time for my BC inspection on my '78 911. To say the least i am VERY scared...not so much for passing of inspection, but wrather who i will have to let mishandle my baby. From what i understand canadian tire does all the inspections (yikes) so my main fear is this:
What are the chances some random fresh out of school c-tire mechanic would know how to correctly lift an old 911 without putting the lift through the floor or giving the sides a body lift:confused:

Has anyone had someone who knew what they were doing? If so which location and who?
Any suggestions to avoid the desire to murder someone and not increase the desire to blow up all Canadian tire stores?

Are you looking to do a BC Provincial vehicle safety inspection?

I highly doubt they will let some fresh out of school mechanic review the vehicle. You have other options as well, besides Canadian Tire. I don't believe your vehicle is subject to the federal inspection (RIV.)

Off the top of my head, I can think of the following shops that specialize in Euros/Porsches:

- Scan Automotive (North Vancouver)
- Brian Jessel Auto Haus (Vancouver - Boundary Road)
- MCL Porsche
- Weissach

The only mandatory inspection in BC I'm aware of is the "Smog" test at the government organized smog station. I had, until a few years ago, an '82 911SC and that only ever had a mandatory "smog" test every year or tow. They do not drive the car but rather put in on a dyno and run the tests. Never had a concern about that. Or, are you talking about the inspection for registering a car that you're bringing in from the US. That's a whole different story but from what I hear Canadian Tire doesn't drive the car. Agree, check with the shops mentioned but I'm not sure what test you're speaking of an I've been driving Porsche's over 40 years in Vancouver.

I can only assume the car is from the US or from another province, or a friendly police officer gave him a vehicle inspection ticket, hence why he is looking for the vehicle inspection. :D

Canadian Tire has an agreement/contract from the feds to perform the RIV inspection but that only applies to car < 15 years old. It's safe to assume this does not apply to his '78 911. They are also able to perform the provincial vehicle inspection, which requires putting the car on to a lift which is OP's primary concern.

OP - I believe Derek Chu @ DC Motorworks on Clark Drive (Vancouver) is licensed to perform vehicle inspections. He has a lot of 911 experience under his belt despite not being known as a Porsche shop. He's rebuilt a 911 from the ground up and has worked on mine and did an amazing job!

Nothing to worry. You don't need to go to Canadian Tire. That's for federal inspections not required for a car your age.

There are lots of BC inspection places around. Here in Kamloops there is a NAPA autopro who did my inspection (1986 930).

as noted above you only need the provincial inspection ( NOT Crappy Tire! ) and I don't know about Aircare. the key is to find a shop that understands what's needed and do a 'sympathetic' inspection. I've had half a dozen cars inspected and never had it on a lift or even had a wheel taken off. ask around and find a shop that understands they're not new cars. and NEVER take it to a tire/alignment shop. I guarantee if you do you'll find you need a complete new front suspension and brakes :rolleyes:
