cross boarder shipping
Hey all, need some info from some that may have already done this. I have sold a gearbox to a Pelican down in Texas. I need to take the box over to Ogdensburg USA to have a local shipper transport to the new owner. What am I going to have to do at the boarder/customs when entering the USA? The box is worth a substantial amount $$, and when entering the states we are always asked if there are any items being left there. Any help appreciated. Philip

I just sold a part and am shipping from Canada. The buyer pays the shipping costs.

I asked last time I crossed and was told to just tell the person what you have and cost to end user , should be good.

Depending on value you may have to pay US duty on the item to leave it in the US (so to speak) Up to the customs officer at the border

Well, all didn't go well today at the boarder. I will need a customs broker to do the paper work to import the gearbox to the USA. Philip:(

Yesterday I went against my own opinion and decided to drop something off at the UPS store in the USA. I've noticed the UPS/FedEx shipping rates in Canada have shot up with the exchange rate. Hell, it is cheaper to go to the USA. Besides had to hit the US post office to pick up a package. Logic was - I'm there already so may as well swing past the UPS store.
Big error on my part - went through the usual Nexus lane like usual. Not even thinking I was doing something wrong. Told the CBP officer what I had and what I was going to do. The officer kicks in "the rules". Yikes!! Well, inside I go. Turns out, the package I was going to ship is deemed to be commercial and there is a commercial fee attached to it and I was in violation of my Nexus pass - no commercial goods permitted through a Nexus lane. Like I can remember what I was "instructed" on what can and can not go through Nexus. An hour later, I pay my $10.25 usd fee and I'm allowed to proceed after a very long lecture. Plus, I have a freaking mark against my Nexus card which I'm sure will generate more questions for future border crossings. Crap!! |
You can hire a customs broker for around $200 or ship via UPS and use their service or hire FTN Networks to broker (div of Fedex) Customs Brokerage | Customs Broker — U.S. and Canada Imports I have used them for Fedex Freight shipments.

And even @ $1.40 there is deal out there.
$96 US delivered in Ogdensburg vice $!92 Cdn from Amazon.ca But since we have a gas price war in Ottawa, the $0.68 a litter was cheaper than the $2.28 US gallon, so I did not fill up there for the firs time since I've been going there... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1454892077.jpg |
