“Part 1 Conclusion”

I guess the point of this thread is so I can keep track of everything I’ve done to or with the car, and this post feels like a bit of a conclusion to part 1 of my 911 ownership. I bought the car three years ago, and basically started out by getting a few bits and pieces sorted out to make this a solid driver and road trip machine. I’ve also been trying to sort out what I ultimately want to do with the car. I’ve owned a number of cool modified and performance cars over the years, but I knew from the start I wanted to get this one right and modify it tastefully and with a coherent theme.

I’ve kept a few guiding principles in mind. I want to keep the car “period correct” in the sense that I want to mix and match what I consider to be the best aspects of 70s 911s. I want the car to have a very “OEM plus” or “sports purpose” feel, without creating a clone or trying to ape an aesthetic that someone else has created. I’m also working to fairly tight budget and I don’t want the car to spend any downtime in the summer months, when it could be on the road.

So the theme I’m working towards is essentially what could have been: a simplified, performance-oriented 70s Porsche that could have existed had US crash/emissions/etc. regulations hadn’t intervened. Maybe with that in mind, the sport seats and updated gauges can live happily with some “backdate” touches.

And the car has to remain a driver, long distance road tripper, backroad carver and occasional trackday toy. It has to be something I don’t hesitate to jump in and drive to work, or to dinner, or to the store, or whatever. It can’t be so temperamental or hardcore that it doesn’t work for all these uses.

So I definitely do have some future plans for modifications, which will hopefully kick off in 2017. For now, this is the culmination of the first phase, reworking the interior, which was starting to show its 275,000 miles.

Future plans? Backdated body is definitely in the works. After that, maybe higher compression, hotter cams, electronic fuel injection breathing through individual throttle bodies. So stay tuned . . .

Sounds great! My wife and I try to make it out that way at least once a year to visit friends. I'll definitely make an effort to attend!
