Vehicle Name '68 Coupe
Year 1968
Make Porsche
Model 912
Color Guards Red
Packages Factory Options: Tinted Glass, Antenna, Bumpers w/ Rubber Inserts, Koni Shocks, Chrome Wheels
History In August of 2004 I purchased this Florida-registered, numbers matching 1968 coupe, VIN# 12804324, showing approximately 122,000 miles on the odometer. My oldest son Nick and I flew down to Orlando to pick up the car, which we drove part-way up the east coast until putting her on the "Auto Train" for the rest of the journey back to her new home in Annapolis.

Thus began my experience learning about the marque, the idiosyncrasies, as well as the passion and the thrill of being a part of the Porsche legacy. Over the next 6 years, I would find that there's much more to these cars than one might expect, and that it pays to do your homework before making sometimes expensive decisions.

Overall though, the restoration has gone quite well and I am delighted to finally have a fully functional car in my garage, rather than the myriad boxes of parts. For the future, I will continue to make minor improvements where needed, but my goal is to keep the car as a "fair weather" driver which is what I bought my Porsche for in the first place. It's not a race car nor a museum relic - it was meant to be driven and enjoyed.

And believe me... I do!
COA
Exterior The car came from the factory wearing Bahama Yellow but, over the years, has been repainted (twice) by PO's. Now clad in Guards Red, for a 12-year old paint job it still looks surprisingly good up close, but not concours-quality by any stretch.

Since taking ownership I've replaced and/or upgraded the following items:
- H4 headlamps
- NOS turnsignal assemblies
- Hella 128 fog lamps
- Horn grills
- New badges/emblems all around
- Window trim
- Rear AMCO bumper bar
- Correct engine bonnet grill w/rain tray

Project #1 - Remove/repaint rear bumper and replace trim.

Interior 2007-2009: ALL new interior from headliner on down, to include the notoriously rare '68 door panels.

Project #2 - Swap out parking brake lever assembly for a period-correct 911 version featuring the idle-assist lever (helpful in cold weather!)

Project #3 - Retrofit Palo Alto restored 911 oil pressure/temperature combo gauge.

Performance Upgrades PO replaced distributor, installed Pertronix ignition system and electronic fuel pump.

Brake components replaced in 2005:
- Master cylinder
- Calipers
- Rotors
- Brake pads
- Bearings
- S/S Brake lines

Engine / Under the Hood PO rebuilt with Mahle 1720cc big-bore kit, 40 IDF Weber carbs, and Bursch exhaust.

Recently retrofitted with the original factory air filter assemblies and hoses. Replaced chromed oil breather and filter assemblies with OEM pieces.

Project #4 - Drop engine/transmission, swap out the chrome fan shroud and detail engine compartment.

Project #5 - Detail front bonnet to include removal/cleanup/sealing of the fuel tank.

Suspension PO installed F/R Weltmeister anti-sway bars and Performance strut tower brace. Car corners fast and flat.

Project #6 - F/R cleanup/detailing of the suspension, replace various under-body bits.

Wheels and Tires 6 x 15 Fuchs recently re-fitted with 205/60R15 Bridgestone Potenza RE960's - VASTLY improved ride comfort and control over the previous Michelin 215R's - and no more rubbing! Highly recommend these tires, which cost less than $80 each!
