History
2/14/73 - Sold new in Colorado Springs, CO. by Alpine Porsche Audi to a Ft. Carson soldier, Gary A. Garrett (Returning from Vietnam?)
For a whopping $9753.94
There is a hole in the History Here...
Gary sold the car to John Reilly? Or was there more owners in between Gary and John? (only 5 yrs.)
3/7/78 - Sold by John J Reilly III, to Jim R. Cole, Boulder, CO area
Jim brought her to MT. (Couldn’t quite cut it at CU, Transferred to MSU? )
She must have been running a bit rough for Jim, - on 4/13 he had Sparr's Towing in Missoula (Seems she must have left Jim on the side of the road once or twice
! ) do a "Complete Service" including; Tune Up, Valve Adjustment, Check FI, Clean and lube Linkages, ( MFI?), Steam Engine, Adjust Belt and Mixture. All that for $231.05 - which included Plugs, Gaskets, Filters, 36 valve cover nuts, and 5 Gallons of Premium for $3.64 ! (48,000 Miles)
Well, that excellent "Complete Service" Didn't last Jim very long, as he brought her into Culver's Foreign Car Service in Missoula on 6/24 for a valve job ( Right Side Only ) Chain Tensioner rebuilds, and a new Right Side Chain. Must have gotten a bit sporty inside the right side of the flat six, as she required 3 new valves, a gear, (Sprocket?) 3 used Rockers, and 2 used chain guides.
So get this - The parts were all of $362.14, and the GT was $530.64 which included an Engine R&R, and you guessed it - a $10.50 Tow!.
I'm thinking this little gal was bit too much for our adventurous young college kid, and she definitely left him stranded road side one too many times ( Pre Cell Phone).
I can only imagine how many Female Types he left hanging because of the antics of our stubborn young frauline! Jealous type I guess? - I've always gone with treating women right if you want them to treat you right!
7/6/78 - After only 5 months of ownership bliss, Jim sold her to Chrystal Higgins of Whitefish, MT. - Chrystal registered her all the way through 1989.
Some time around this time, a young college student, who I assume was Chrystal's daughter, brought the car in to an independent Porsche repair shop owned by William (Bill) Conant in the Big Fork Area for some Engine Service. (Are you seeing the pattern with the college students here?)
The Young Lady could not afford the repairs so she left the car with Bill and promised to come by and make payments as she was able. She did so a couple of times, and then was never to be heard from again. Bill held onto her (the car) for some time and finally lost hope in ever seeing the young lady again, and held a public auction for her. No one showed
- Bill was the only bidder ($1).
Bill and his wife were excited to one day restore her to her shiny white that she was on Valentines Day in 1973. But alas, Das Kinder and werk got in the way, and then one day Bill found himself building custom homes with his grown sons.
The young lass - now a bit older and worse for the wear and tear was all but forgotten where she was squirreled away some 20 years earlier.
Bill lost interest and decided to let someone else bring the ole gal back to her Pearly White.
1/7/2008 - That's when I found her on Ebay. I was the High Bidder, (thanks to Esnipe) and the going Market price of about $10K. I bought her sight unseen (except EBay pictures) and a few lengthy conversations with Bill.
So I drove up to MT. from Colorado Springs, CO. in January. We made a Father and son snowboarding trip out of it, setting up camp at Bucks T4 Lodge in Big Sky
. I left Mark and Nick (the other father and son) and my son Joe back at the lodge to have fun in the 2+' of fresh powder
that fell by morning and I took one for the team and at the crack o' dawn hauled up to Big Fork in Marks AWESOME Dodge Ram ( Cummins ) and picked her up. When I arrived, Bill’s Son had her all loaded up on the U-haul trailer for me, and I did the paperwork, loaded the engine (that Bill removed back in '89) in the back and headed down the road. Bill's Son advised that I may want to take the road less traveled on the way back to Big Sky, as Der Schnee was coming down pretty good now, and there should be less Traffic on the southern route.
The Dodge pulled that load like it wasn't back there. The trip was a total white out. And he was right - There was no traffic, unfortunately, no street lights either... The occasional house light, victim, (Car up ahead ) and the knowledge of my precious cargo kept me on the road. 30 minutes down the road I was trekking through 18" of Fresh White.
After awhile, I would forget I was pulling anything and was frequently shocked by the little windshield that was obviously following to close. (Picture Below).
I got back to Big Fork after our hardworking snow warriors were fast asleep. Got up the next morning to 2 more feet of Fresh Powder and let me just tell you - the powder at Big Sky is all they say it is in the promotional info they publish
After we skated through MT. and WY. ( yes you read that right! Have you ever driven I90/ I25 in January? ) Crossed into CO. and it was like Global Warming was in full gear. (Al must have flown his Lear into DIA that day) Clear sailing into Sunny Southern Colorado, Back were she started.
It took 2 days for the Ice and schnee (Snow) to melt after she rolled into the my warehouse.
The preceding should give a good explanation of her name
And as evidenced by the history laid out here, I was pleasantly surprised to find a good bit of documentation on her. She is gonna take time - but she will be returned to her Pearly White ! After almost two years, I’ve eked out enough spare time to get her mostly disassembled, and well along to know there is all but no Rust!
(Somebody Pinch Me !)
