Question 74 Chevy horn question

I love old pickups. I have a 74 Chevy K10 which started having a problem 2-3 days ago where the horn beeps when I turn the steering wheel. I took the horn assembly apart & cleaned it - it's worse. Beeps oftener now. I need to replace the directional switch assembly - it's one of those "mystery" operations right now, where you have to wiggle the stalk to get a connection, but I can't see that they're connected.. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I disconnected the horn button for the moment, but road-testing while praying no officers will pull me over is hard on the nerves. And they do that up here every once in awhile. Thanks!
