Help Identify this motor
![]() Trying to identify this motor...... ![]() ![]() Six-cyl inline with aluminum block & head, OH cam, and it looks like a truck block. It's electronic injected with a Stainless Steel Fuel Rail and spark plugs so it must be a gas motor. It has this bar Code tag on the Flywheel end of the Valve cover....... ![]() It came from a Chevrolet/Isuzu dealer so we suspect its a Isuzu Truck engine but no one at Isuzu can identify this as of yet. Thought I would turn to the automotive experts at Pelican. Thanks in advance for looking. Len

can you show the timing end please? The water pump looks vaguely SAAB. And are the plug wells full of ice? The motor's probably frozen! har har har

![]() This has been identified as a Chevrolet 2005 vintage motor for the Trail Blazer and similar GM models. According to Wards, one of the 10 best engineered motors worldwide for many years running from around 2000 thru 2008 (???). Inline 6 w lots of torque, 3.2 ltr, 4 valve, variable valve timing for improved torque. A great motor. Thank you Pelicans all for the info. Len

That my friend is a 4.2 L inline 6 made for the trailblazer by GM. Various issues initially with the cylinders breaking at the top apparently caused by improperly pressing the sleeves into the bore from the plant. Variable exhaust camshaft only. Exhaust manifolds had a problem with cracking!
Chris Oh..and the hole through the oil pan is where the front drive axle went through and connected to the actuator for the front differential! I wouldn't call it a torque motor but once they started to wind up they went pretty good....possibly heavy vehicle and bad final drive made them feel sluggish IMHO

I have that motor in my 2005 Envoy.
I know a few other people who have gotten good service out of them. Ours has 142K with no real motor issues. I have been told that the the head gaskets fail at high milage as well as the cam chains - apparently expensive to fix. I haven't personally seen either of those problems or the exhaust manifold cracking on 4 out 5 that I know about. The fifth is currently showing all the signs of a failed head gasket at 170K. That one was bought used and I don't know it's history. My Envoy gets similar gas mileage to my 1998 K1500 with the 5.7 V8 - so I'm not seeing a real work advantage to the straight 6. |

The first few Envoys/trailblazers that we saw come back to the dealership had the cylinder crack issue...but there weren't that many. And if that timing chain breaks...yup..about 25-30 hrs labour to replace the head. And thats just the start of it! By the time your all said and done, you'd looking at a $4-5k bill. Not really worth fixing IMO! Good to hear that you got good service from your BTW
