Replacing Input Unit for On-Board Computer

The LED on my Input Unit for On-Board Computer Check Control/Outdoor Temperature has stopped working and I would like to replace the Input Unit. But before I buy the Input Unit ($550) I would like to have a good understanding of how to R/R the unit.

Specically, how to remover the center consol to get at the old unit.

I have a 1998 323i, E36 3 Series.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
