my friend bought a 2009 Mini and the battery went out so is this year need a reset to charge right? Its a 4 dr...

R56 models need to have the battery registered using a MINI scan tool.

Not all of them, from what I have read. Some have the Intelligent Battery System, while others do not. If there is an electronic module on the (+) cable right by the battery, then the car does have the IBS and registration does need to be performed. Your dealer, or a good MINI or BMW specialist, should have the software that can perform the reset.
