Does a 2005 Mini Convertible need to be programmed after battery replacement, or is that only for later models? thanks

Only later models. Not yours.

The first gen MINI batteries do not come equiped with the IBS unit. In your case your first gen cabrio is an R52. Therefore, the second gen cabrio MINI, the R57, would be the one the owner would need to check if it has an IBS unit for registration.
