The battery may be discharged. Try jump starting the vehicle, follow the instructions here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/MINI_R56/23-BASICS-Battery_and_Connection_Notes_Replacement/23-BASICS-Battery_and_Connection_Notes_Replacement.htm

How old is the battery and has it ever been replaced? What year R56 do you have? Test the battery. It should read about 12.6 volts. Anything lower than 12 it will need to be replaced. Also seen 12.2 needing to be replaced as well.

When you put the key in do lights come on inside? When you turn the key do you hear the engine attempting to turn over? Do you have a scan tool? I'd highly suggest plugging into your OBDII and checking to see if any codes are present. This is the type of tool that will be needed: Mini Cooper, Cooper S, and Clubman (R55/R56/R57) - Tools - Page 8. If you plan to work on your MINI in the future, it's not a bad investment. However, if you do not you can try and tow it to an Autozone and have them pull codes from the DME for you. It might work, might not as it depends on if there scanner will read the codes currently. Once you read the fault codes, post them up here and I can help you diagnose further. Let me know about my questions.
