'Romeo and Juliet' is songcraft at a very high level. Knowing the story behind it, I have yet to see Mark perform the song in a way that his pain/suffering/sadness is not obvious and very real even now, 35 years later.

I’m not clicking on any of these links. If I do I’ll be up all night with the headphones on.
It’s hotter than the hinges of hell here, not fit to be outside pst noon. Tomorrow afternoon I’ll mix a shaker of cocktails and revisit this thread. I am so looking forward to it.

I don't know enough about playing a guitar to say "this guy is better than that guy" or anything like that. All that I can really do is have an opinion.

I liked both of the guitarists in the first post. Which I liked better would probably depend upon my mood or what I was doing when I listened.

I do love SRV.

I assume that at a very high level there are some players that are naturally talented and can make a guitar do things that surprise people. I assume there are also folks at a very high level that have trained and trained and are technical masters. Are there folks that are a mix of both and therefore surpass either of the other two?

Music and playing an instrument, I have to think is greatest when it's about feeling/emotion. I never learned to play anything. I've got good rhythm and coordination, but I don't think I have the ear for it. I'll just keep enjoying what other folks are doing.

Well said, and normally I'd agree. But in this particular case, Knopfler has moved on, and he knows it. The guitar work is much more refined in the second. It is a different version, some will like the first more, some the second- it is a matter of opinion. I myself have flip-flopped between the two- which is why I decided you guys might like to ponder the same conundrum- raw talent Vs refined elegance- or something to that effect.

In my opionion the debut album Dire Straits, side 1, five songs including `Down to the waterline`, `Water of love`, Setting me up`, Six blade knife`is the epitome of what carved out my guitar and music stile. The rythm and very special guitar picking on those songs are truly one of a kind.

OK...so I listened to Making Movies, Communique, then Knopler on Infidels last evening....all were in one of my players....now I gotta go find that first release....:).
