Mexican Beetles... the Cars, not the insects

Has anyone ever imported a Mexican VW Beetle? The newest ones are 15 years old now and are admissible into Canada.

Has anyone imported one? I want a baja bug and this seems like an inexpensive way to get a rust free car as a starting point.

Is this crazy? Am I better off buying a nicely put together baja bug off the samba?

How much is one?
Plus the conversion costs vs a completed bug?

Start with RIV and see if they are on Transport Canada's list of vehicles you can import. RIV is Livingstone Int. They formed a company to do Transport Canada's job. You might have to phone Transport Canada to actually find out the answer to that question. I looked into it a bit when I wanted to buy a Thing many years ago

The next problem is actually importing it. I remember reading that you can't import vehicles from Mexico into the USA. No idea why. While you are importing it into Canada it has to go thru the USA first and unless it in in a container, in bond, US Customs can consider it being imported into the USA first.

They are fifteen years old now, therefore they qualify for importation.
