Does not look canine to me. If you were to apply Occam's Razor it would be as likely to me a cat. Cats have been in that area since the 80s for sure from the sightings.

Also, the posture.

That's what I saw in the pic, a dog.

Look at the rear paws and the front legs. Totally different posture and build.

I flipped the image and cut the front off to match the OP.

A mountain lion would be far more dramatic, even exciting. Everybody wants to see a MTN lion...But a lowly coyote? Blah. MTN lions make news.

I walk my 150 lbs dog on a local trail that starts right outside my driveway. I can't tell you how many times people come off the trail all excited talking about seeing MTN lion tracks. Oh brother. Yotes are a dime a dozen across the country. What fun is the picture if its just a scared coyote.

Although our general area has a lot of coyotes, in my specific neighborhood they're not spotted nearly as often as lions are. Heck, along with lions, we see more bears, moose and elk near our home than do coyotes - and we're within the city limits.

That said, I have to agree with you that if it's just a coyote then it's no fun for the media.

The hindquarters look muscular. Yotes are scrawny. With a summer coat coyotes look especially scrawny. I did come across a pict of a cougar in a tree worth sharing.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1534949928.jpg

Dogs (including coyote) are capable of tucking their front legs under like that when cold.

Example:

We will never know for sure what it is, heck of a guessing game though.

I do not think it is a big cat, but that was my first reaction.
