Its just a matter of time until the hurricanes that are lined up in the Atlantic score a strike on the many cities built out on places that shouldn't of had permits. I don't think they should have built houses in New Orleans, and then rebuild them after Katrina as its only a matter of a few years until the '100 year storm' is back. There should be no federal funds to rebuild anything this storm damages except infrastructure. If your house get destroyed that should be a matter of you and the insurance company not the tax payer. |

This is a mini-version of the banks that take home the profits but if their bets don't work out they want tax payers to bail them out (2008). |

Kahl, I agree 100% with you about the feds paying for homeowners to rebuild over and over.
Of course you seem to have no information about where you live. California has huge fires, earthquakes and mudslides. Every state has had disasters. I think FEMA should be shut down. Just have a rescue for folks that deserve it. If you were under mandatory evacuation and you choose to stay, don't risk the rescuers lives. From what I saw, Baz has insurance, and has paid way more than he ever received. I have no federal insurance. It is 100% me paying a private insurance company for my coverage.

I purchased my 17KW setup in 2006 and NEVER USED IT until 2017 for the mathematically challenged that was 11 years of not needing it. Prior to the 2004 Hurricane season I lived in Florida for 20 years and never had a storm hit me. My friend used to be a 1/3 partner in a vacation home in the Abaco's in the Bahamas. Hurricane coverage on the house would run 10K a year and this was back in the 1980's. They all paid cash for the house so they decided to not insure it and put 10K a year in a trust fund. 20 years later a hurricane tore the house from its foundation and destroyed it. They had 200K in the fund, the rebuild it for less than that, and then continued to contribute to the fund. Once my house is paid off I may consider doing the same. Now lets discuss all those idiots that live in tornado alley. Then we can discuss all the idiots living in California where they are past due for a yuge earthquake. Then we can discuss all the idiots that live up North and get hit by Northeasters that are as bad as hurricanes, except with snow.

Tornadoes are rare, even in Oklahoma. They hit a tiny area. Unless you live in Moore, OK.
My 4 grandparents all lived to be over 75 and never even saw one in person. I know a lot of folks that never have seen one. I pay for my storm coverage. No government help at all. I have lived in Oklahoma for 40 years. I have actually seen two tornadoes. One was close to our house and it tore up some cars in a parking lot a couple of miles away. For whatever reason, Moore, OK has had two very rare EF5 tornadoes. It is like getting hit by lightning and then getting bit by a shark on the same day. Hurricanes don't sneak up on anyone, yet they kill a lot of people every year. Lots of people live in areas prone to wildfires. Mudslides, race riots, and earthquakes in mega cities are all likely. LA will indeed have a bad earthquake soon. No one knows for sure when, but soon. Hawaii and Washington have volcanoes.

I should also add, in 2004 I had 2 storm eyes over my house. Almost no damage at my home, I lost my office I will post that experience when I have time and maybe a beer in my hand.
In 2005 I had another storm eye over my house. No Damage. In 2017 I had Irma pass near me. No damage. In every case I went from 1 week to 1 month with no power. Seems our power companies cannot figure out how to shore up their infrastructure to weather a storm. Want to discuss Japan and their ability to go back to work a day after a a typhoon? Edit 1 more point. I just spent 14K on a new metal roof with the only thought in my head being "this will hold up better in a hurricane." I just spent 20K on impact windows on the back of my house with the only thought being, this will make getting ready for a storm easier.

Trying to catch up with the coverage and much of the pictures and videos are repetitive, is the worse impact so far the storm surge immediately along the coast?
I've seen pictures of many mature trees that have fallen, with the worst damage on houses and homes along the coast with the storm surge water. How significant is the standing water (for example) and the wind? Stay safe and best wishes to all.

Brunswick Co. still reporting 86% of customers without power. But the winds slowed enough to allow crews to start the repairs.
