Anyone here mount and balance your own tires?

I will post my experiences too. My tire change kit should be here tomorrow. Mostly levers but a few other items too. The Bikemaster balancer won't be here until later in the month, which is OK, for now. |
I have done it many times and each time I swear I’ll use a shop. Lube is your friend. I dilute a mixture of dish soap and water to make a slippery mess that helps the tire move around the rim when levering it on. It also helps sealing when inflating. You’ll need to place the rim onto carpet or some other surface to protect the finish and the disk. Get some rim protectors - nylon strips that you slip over the edge of the rim to protect it from tire lever gouges. Buy a harbor freight wheel stand for balancing. There are a lot of videos on YouTube. But like I said, once I start the process I regret it as I don’t have the fancy garage equipment for tire fitting. It can be physical work. Good luck.

WD40 for lube and tire beads for balance. Done

Thanks, Yorkie!
The advice I have seen was to use Windex in a spray bottle for lubrication. I have a lever set/kit coming today and also a Bikemaster balance stand on order. Hopefully I won't regret trying to do it myself!!! :) |
Take a look at installing motorcycle tires using zip ties, will try that.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1747938095.jpg

Went muddling last weekend. Half the bike started to rattle loose. Time for a big service anyway. |
My Bikemaster balance stand just arrived......

That looks really safe.

Checked my rims first on the balance stand and both were already very balanced! Will do the entire wheels tomorrow. I still have to get the rear brakes working before mounting the rear and then changing the front one. Hopefully will get that all done this w/e! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1748036231.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1748036231.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1748036231.JPG |
