Are Rolex worth the $?
 

I know, I know....its subjective.

Been thinking about a 50th gift for myself. Oyster perpetual Date Adjust is ringing some bells for me.

Does the watch match the price, or is there a steep premium based on name only?

Think of all the satisfaction that you can have, having all that money in the bank instead.

Do you want people to know you spent or do you want an interesting mechanical machine on your wrist? I think you can have the latter for a lot less $$.

I think so, one of the few things you can use and it will be worth more next year than what you pay today. The one I wear now my wife bought me in 2004, a GMT Master and I wear it every day all day. The one I had before was a late 80s GMT Master and I wore it all day every day. I have other watches but I wear the Rolex.

It is subjective but Yes...for me. My 2 liner Submariner is still worth what I paid for it in 2004 but that's not the point. Of all my mechanical watches it's the one I would keep if I could only keep one.

It's no Patek but I really enjoy wearing it. It also has been running without issue for close to 15 years....I assume it will need service some day.

I bought a Panerai for my 50th.Sold it a few years later....still have the Rolex.

If this were true everyone would be investing in rolexes over the stock market. You buy at retail it might be decades if it ever surpasses what you paid for it.

OP, no. Since the time that pocket computers (mobile phones ) arrived the mechanical watch was regulated to man jewelry. They just scream look at me...Rolex being top of that heap. Not a popular opinion here I am sure. Jewelry is for women.

Are Porsches worth the $? The same question can be asked of many things...if man makes an item, some become desirable as a status symbol, others not so much. Really boils down to the wants of the individual. If you want it, by all means do so...but hopefully without guilt.

YOu don't need a 911, but you want one so that's why we have them. Men jewelry, rings or whatever, you want one, get it. Personally, I like my Timex. I almost never look at my phone for time, A flick of my wrist is all I need.

Aren't the mechanicals all the same? The astronomical prices for some is based on the varying grade of bling attached to the case/face.

OK... The short answer is "it depends".

I think mechanical watches are over rated.
I get the mechanical made in Switzerland thing but a $10 quartz watch will keep better time than any mechanical watch regardless of cost.
And you can take it off and put it in a draw and it will still be working after a week.

Right now I'm looking for a nice Rolex Oysterquartz. About two years from a battery and the movement is 100% Rolex.
(They didn't make many of them compared to the mechanical models... About 20,000 made total)

"Worth it?" I would say no...they are not the best mechanical watch out there, just the most recognized. They are like Cohiba cigars, Dom Perignon champagne, Montblanc fountain pens etc.
There are several Swiss automatic chronometers at less than half the price which work as well and have just as much cool factor imho. However, I still want one ;-)

I had a GMT that I bought slightly used from a customer that was a jeweler, square deal that saved a good bit from new. Had it a lot of years and wore it all the time. I finally wound up being a little self-conscious about it and downshifted to Omega. I feel like I'm in the quality zone now without paying a big premium for something I would feel pretentious about. It's all subjective. Almost 8 years ago I dipped my toe in the water with a quartz 300M- it was only $1,600 delivered tax free and a US model. Gave me the look of the Submariner and I really like the quartz thing, too. They don't go up in value and they're not as repairable as a mechanical watch, but I like the lower cost and that it always has the right time on it when I pull it out of the drawer. It seems like Omega is making less and less quartz models now, which is kind of a bummer.
