What the hell good is that?

Kind of surprising that there is time between the end of the bike rally and this event to completely reconfigure the town for it. Many of the storefronts on Lazelle Street, the "main drag" always shown in all of the photos, are only occupied during the rally. They sit empty the rest of the year. Year-round businesses, that are not motorcycle oriented, have been pushed out. The insane profits during the three weeks around the rally are enough to effectively keep these properties reserved for rally specific occupants.

So, unless they were greeted with locked up, empty storefronts, I assume the Mustang crowd must have filled them with their vendors as well. Quite a feat, I would think, clearing them out and re-filling them with completely different merchandise.

This kind of makes me wonder just how many rallies Sturgis must host in a given year. I guess that could be a business model for a small town - just keep flipping rallies. It certainly is a beautiful place to ride or drive. At least until everyone else shows up.

Never having been there, I also found myself wondering the same about Sturgis. Sort of a resort town gathering point for all sorts of gearhead events? Our daughter was a surgical nurse in Rapid for a while...things got very busy with the biker rally.

That might be a good thing to strive for, if they aren't there already. I've been through there a couple of times outside of the rally, and it is somewhat of a ghost town. There is a lot of resentment among the locals, in that all of the money to be made during the rally is made by vendors that swoop in for the rally and then leave. The town and surrounding areas put up with all of the hassles involved with half a million people descending upon them for a couple of weeks, but reap very little economic benefit from it. Maybe if they can make it into some sort of a destination spot for this sort of thing, they can set things up a bit more permanently and reap some benefit from it. Who knows, maybe they already have. It's been damn near 20 years since I have been there.

Maybe somebody should give the Sturgis City Council an idea...
