Anyone have any luck asking a body shop to spray a small part?
I’m not. Need to have a front valence panel sprayed - can’t get a shop to even entertain the thought. For me to buy an HVLP setup for one job is nuts, and I don’t have a space that could easily double as a spray booth either.

I got lucky when I went looking for a body color match for my ugly silver rear bumper on my Titan. I spoke with the owner, who also owned a Titan, & said he'd do it for $200 if I took it off & brought it in. The shop manager was pissed, said $200 wouldn't cover the cost, but had it done anyway. They did a nice job. Cash is king.

I had to paint the vents on a poppy red Mustang. I had Paint Scratch com do a color match. The color was exact. Used spray cans and it came out perfect. You might check them out.

Yes, many times.
Recently I had the hood and bumpers on my E30 resprayed. Came out perfect. The hood on my FJ was starting to peel, about a month ago I had that resprayed too. Years ago I purchased a carbon fiber hood for my RX7, I really tried to like it. I really did. I just could not, I had it sprayed to match the car. It is pretty common it should not be hard to find a shop that will do it Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk |
No, at least not around me on Long Island..
I have my own HVLP gun etc... I put color on a new carbon RSR bumper for one of my cars, but had run out of clear... so I went to a few body shops near me one couldn't be bothered, one quoted me $500 apparently just another way of couldn't be bothered.., and one quoted $200 but would not commit to when they would do it.. I think if they are churning out insurance work, the last thing they want to deal with is one offs.. |
My guy will paint anything I ask him to. He does excellent work and I pay his asking price with a smile.
It is a great relationship based on trust and respect. |
It cost $500 to have he front and rear bumpers on my truck repainted the correct color, black to silver. No prep involved.

I've had a duck tail painted and several years later i brought in my right front fender and a front hood (smuck a deer). They didn't jump right on them but were more than happy to do them.

If you have a decent size air compressor, for less than $20 the harbor freight HVLP conversion gun actually works pretty well:https://www.harborfreight.com/air-tools/paint/20-fl-oz-hvlp-gravity-feed-air-spray-gun-62300.html
Spray outside on a nice day. Assuming this is a daily driver......and not concourse. For what it's worth, third front bumper on my wife's MDX remained as out of the box, dark grey. It's also lasted the longest..... |

For that price you can buy two sprayers: https://www.eastwood.com/rockwood-8-piece-hvlp-paint-gun-set.html?SRCCODE=PLA00020&msclkid=112dcaf7aaa41a29 b10b96dd031c5fab (then you will own them, ready for the next job) Use single-stage factory code paint from internet (2 pints?) over well cured primer or it will crackle as the primer continues to shrink. (need a plastic paint or flex additive I'd guess) Rattle can also look decent if you're patient careful and apply enough but probably wont last on big flat parts that flex. Did a couple mirrors with rattle that looked better than the OEM side and lasted when clearcoat used. |
Go to your local auto-body - paint supply place and ask if they know anyone who might be interested in doing it. There's a TON of private parties who do restoration work on their own classic cars. Worth a shot.

Couple a years ago my daughter was driving her nissan Murano up at Mammoth mountain and went into a snow drift and messed up the front valence/bumper.
I ordered a new one, painted to match, on e-bay for less than $300 delivered. the paint was not a perfect match but was close enough so that most people could not tell. I had to look really close to see any difference. Would definitely do it again. |
Too bad you're not around here, I know plenty of places that would do it. Around $300, from previous experience. Good luck.

I had the same e39 bumper that you pictured done a couple of years ago. My problem was finding a shop that would do it for a reasonable price. Some of the quotes I was getting seemed insane, especially since I was giving them a new bumper in primer that shouldn’t have needed a ton of prep work.
I ended up paying $450 for it done in Stahlblau Metallic. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/FE3WUs.jpg They did a pretty good job of matching the color but the quality of the paint job itself wasn’t all that great. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/mjPwWr.jpg Also, if you're doing the install yourself, buy about ONE MILLION of these plastic rivets instead of trying to reuse the old ones. ;) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/afJIU7.jpg |
That’s one pretty 530, SoCal. Wow.
Thanks for the ideas. It’s not even about price right now- it’s they can’t be bothered. “My guy” retired, as so many of my guys have. And I’m only 52. I thought hvlp rigs were $500+ but I see they don’t require their own turbulators anymore. I haven’t painted a car in 25 years and lost the handle on the state of the industry. I will look into buying one but I can’t buy **** tools. Asking at the auto body supply store is a good idea - except wait, they closed too! |
Haha, slippery slope. It's a great hobby.
And the good thing about painting a bumper is it's a sacrificial (to some degree or another) bit of car. |
If it is a common color like black or white and you have a high volume paint shop nearby you could go there and ask them to call you when they have a car getting painted.
Then run it over there and it should be a lot cheaper. I've ordered online a specific color in a rattle can. My VW wagon got rear ended, bought a used $100 tailgate and did that. Came out decent. |
BTW, what year color model car is it ?
Depends on the value of the car too. I just rattle canned F&R bumpers for a 65 356 C slate gray. I'll let the next guy restore the car. |
