the Ford Excursion.
whoa!!
you know my road show that is giving me heart palpitations..about public speaking? well, it is indeed upon us. we got a Ford Excursion to take the road-show equipment around this great State. one instructor (afraid to fly?) was all to happy to volunteer to drive. i picked it up, cleaned it and filled it with fuel. that is easily the most enormous vehicle i have ever piloted, that didnt say "PENSKE" or "UHAUL" on the sides. it is a big giant 4x4 SUV. it just feels huge. bigger than say a F350 pickup truck. blind spot for days..panoramic windshield view. how did that rig do for Ford? was it a good seller? i cant imagine the niche it fills. someone with lots of kids? i'm gonna sneak a bike into the thing..maybe some fishing gear..hehe. |
I don't think they sold them for very long.
|
I have a REALLY nice 2004 dark green Excursion with a low mileage (EGR deleted) 6.0L diesel Limited that has all the bells, and whistles. We love it as a family cruiser that alos pulls our 32' camper, and an occasional backhoe.
Ours has a 2" lift with 33" tires, and aftermarket wheels, all leather, with premium sound, and overhead DVD. Fully loaded on our recent Summer vacation to a mountain cabin, with 6 people, luggage and a bike rack, cruising at 75 mph, it still knocked down 18.5 MPG......love it. I don't think Ford wanted to keep making them for the fairly small audience, and they were alot of money to buy new. |
I had one very similar to ckelly.
An 04 I bought in 08, put 100k on it and sold for what I paid. They have a solid following. Ultimately I wanted a one ton to pull my camper so I got a pickup instead. I loved that rig. |
Friend owns a funeral home and has the big Escalade. Never know when you might need to inconspicuously haul a stiff.
|
A friend of mine used to have one. She is 4'11". Wish I could have snapped a pic of her in the driver's seat.

The majority of SUV drivers are female. I wish I had bookmarked some links of early discussions bashing SUV's as being "pointless macho", and "and catered to much to male ego". |
I hadn't heard that but that women liked them because they were safe, or the perception thereof anyway. When I was publishing Modern Dad magazine back in the 90s we had funny article on hot rodding your minivan.

Diesel Excursions are nearly at cult vehicle status. Especially the 7.3 diesels.
|
the Ford Excursion.
Similar to Jeep Wrangler, Chevy Avalanche, Ford Explorer Sport, Toyota FJ, they hold value because they are a unique setup with no real direct competition.
Anyone I’ve known with one uses it like ckelly. Long distance, heavy duty family truckster. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Yeah the minivan gets better mileage and hauls more.
Who would want to go 'off-roading' on a single lane dirt track (maximum 'offroad' or else get stuck in mud forever), in some bloated 8,000lb box which can't fit through the woods anyways? |
Had an 01 7.3 4x4 wish I never got rid of it. Now I have an 01 7.3 4x4 f350. And before the excursion can you guess that’s right 00 7.3 not 4x4 f250. Oh I also have wait a minute... an 02 triton v8 f150. Yes I’m partial to early 2000 fords. The ones I previously sold all had at least 350k miles and ran great time of sale. I would buy another in a heartbeat.

Good luck towing anything with a minivan and no way you can fit more in them.
With the seats down and out it swallowed tons of stuff and pulled my 12k pound camper at altitude. I agree Matt, if I didn’t use my bed a ton I’d have one too instead of my pickup and I’d put a 6.7L in it. |
the Ford Excursion.
Plenty of companies are taking old excursion bodies and putting them on new truck frames. They use the new drivetrain and front end for the updated look. I’ve seen 2 around town and drool every time.

I wonder how much?

Nice puller for a track car. Sleep in it!

This is the only other vehicle that really compares to the Excursion. :D

Gasoline prices done the Excursion in..
I do like them..but have no use for one. |

Not sure what it costs to build one but I found an ‘11 with 28k miles for 55k. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Last year was 05 that must be a rebodied f250.
|
my ex father in law bought one new, loaded eddie bauer edition with the 7.3 I believe. My son was hoping to get his hands on it but unfortunately his grandfather went full alzheimers in the last few years and a lot of his property is in very poor shape. The excursion has relatively low miles but he left it outside with 1 or more windows open in the soggy whidbey island weather for quite a long time and it is pretty trashed apparently :-(
|
Wow that's a nice truck.

I had a 2001 4x4 7.3 Limited. It was awesome. My family got rear ended in it and walked away. Unfortunately it was already impossible to find a good replacement at the price the insurance paid out. It was a great vehicle to take camping, to the snow etc. I would hunt out of it as well and sleep in the back comfortably without folding the second row seats. The only downside was the noise the 7.3 made. I saw a lot more game when road hunting when I switched to a Sequoia.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1546754462.jpg I picked this one up in Montana I wanted a diesel tow vehicle but couldn't stomach the $$$ they want for the new ones. Its a 2001 7.3 liter 4x4 and yes it is a beast you know you are driving a large vehicle but digging it so far on the drive home to Southern California it average 22 mpg. |
Just for laughs I looked these up on Kijiji and found that most of the diesels for sale have upwards of 500,000 km or 300,000 miles on them....
The V-10s seem to be cheap and more plentiful than the diesels and that 7.3 powerstroke sure does command a premium! Maybe the V-10s are where the re-bodied Excursions come from? |
I looked for awhile at Excursions, and finally found the 2004 Limited with a low mileage (135,000 miles) 6.0L diesel that had already been EGR delete, and well taken care of for $14,000. There are many V-10 versions (8-10 MPG) out there, but the fuel mileage is about 1/2 of what my diesel gets, and don't sound nearly as good.
We live on a farm, and constantly pull heavy trailers with large equipment, a 32' camper, or hay wagons, with 100s of bales of hay, and need the 4x4 to get out of, or into the fields/yard without slipping. City folks can't wrap their heads around why anyone would need such a vehicle, in the same respect that I can't figure out the need for electric hybrids. |

Some nice rigs folks!

Well, I may be joining the club, a buddy has offered me a 2001 V10 Limited, with around 110K on the clock, for less that it is going to cost to paint my old Suburban 2500 4x4. Everything works, but the tires are old and the wheels are ugly. I need to decide which I want to too with.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1563309481.jpg

the niche it fills is a dog breeder who wants to take x number of Golden Retrievers in crates to a dog show
she told me it was a perfect fit small group, obviously |
We often make Costco runs with my daughter and her fiance, and bring along our freind couple as well...plenty of room for groceries after seating 6 people.
Hoping to make mine last for 10-15 years. |
Best Tow Vehicle.............
We bought a 2003 turbo diesel Excursion in 2005 that had 23,000 miles on the clock. We (the wife and I) drove it for 10 years, put over 100K on it and still got 3/4 of the price back when I sold it. We used it for trips and to tow a 25ft camper. I never found a hill that it would not accelerate up briskly towing the camper! That thing had tons of room and would get just as good fuel mileage with 6-7 people on board along with their luggage as it would with one or two! In 10 years of ownership, the only thing that needed attention was the turbo that had to be removed and cleaned. We were sitting at a traffic light at one time when a non-attentive driver rammed the back with her Chevrolet Blazer. The Blazer had to be towed while the only damage to the Excursion was a slightly bent rear bumper and door hinge! That thing was just about as safe as anything on 4 wheels! If Ford built them now, they would probably be in the $125-$150K range. Loved that car!

I think the Excursion was basically revived only not as capable as the original in the Expedition XL. I've been looking at the Expy's ever since we rented a GMC Yukon XL to haul 7 people out east to visit my sister. I was amazed that a pig like that got 24 mpg on the highway so I had to start looking into the Expedition.
My biggest problem with the Excursion is, every one I have ever ridden in rode just like my truck. Same can't be said for the Yukon XL or the Expedition XL. |
