Amazing recovery to roll it backwards into the box.

Brad is smarter than he looks.

Smart or lucky, either one works ;)

Just in case anyone is interested in some actual technical stuff, like a technical director discussing the aero philosophy of their current car on TV, which basically never happens...

does he divulge all the team's secrets?

NASCAR really runs Mustang bodied cars?
I haven't watched in awhile.

Four door models are in the top tier, two door models are in the second tier.

Second tier is Supra, Camaro, Mustang.

I'm not sure what is in the top teir.

Fusion, Camry, not sure on chevy.

I watch smaller racing series these days with less corporate interference in what gets said.

Wait, top tier? Second tier. Yesterday was Talladega which I would assume is a top tier race. Did it with mustangs and cameros

This is brilliant, thanks for the link. He gives a hint of how complex an aero problem they have to solve within the constraints of the rules. I did not realize they might have new front wings for every race; that pace of development is incredible.

I also found it interesting that the coordinate system is the same as is used in many aircraft designs.

Sponsor names of the tiers change.

Multiple tiers can race at the same track on the same weekend.

As I mentioned, big corporate clampdown caused me to lose interest.

I believe top tier is Monster Energy.

Second tier is some company with an orange logo.

Then below that is a series that has two different championships, east and west, sponsored by K&N.

Then there are lots of other NASCAR series, including NASCAR Mexico(Which is very entertaining). NASCAR Europe(Not very interesting, aside from getting to see big V8's run Spaw.)

Did Toto hack your account. This is assuming Mercedes are not developing and everyone else is.

Ferrari had an entire season prior to develop a car to beat Merc, hell, they can start right now on next year and they STILL will not have a contender.

Furthermore, we still do not even know if Merc is actually pushing their cars. They can still be sandbagging with some engine power in reserve.

I do not believe that Ferrari have more HP than Merc, I think there is more at play here.

I honestly think Merc is running more downforce, because they can. I also think they are dialed back because they do not need it.

I bet they laughed every day in the preseason after a day of testing watching the Red cars trying so hard, knowing they had nothing.

I'm a Ferrari fan, and I'm tired of watching the Mercedes domination. With that said, I agree with everything you've written. Other than the race in which Leclerc ran away with it until his car failed him, Mercedes has been able to answer every charge Ferrari has made at them during the race. Ferrari has occasionally closed to within nearly a second of a Mercedes, then the Mercedes has just gotten with the program and walked away at will.

The mid season improvements will happen with Mercedes too, so I see no closing of the gap as a result.

It's a one horse show right now. Ferrari are not true contenders it seems.

chapo 04-29-2019 07:36 PM

Had a great weekend view vintage racing my 912, didn’t even care that all of the practices and qualifying recorded but the race didn’t. Get out there and do more!

Mercedes tend to develop better than any other team, how anyone can think anyone is catching them through development is beyond me, then again we can hope.

Qauly now takes me 5 mins to watch on my DVR

The race takes 15-20 minutes. My weekend of watching F1 has been reduced to morning coffee.

:D OTOH, I've got to admit that Indycar put on a heck of a show on the Indy GP circuit yesterday. Some great racing.

javadog 05-12-2019 07:18 AM

Outstanding.

bkreigsr 05-12-2019 08:19 AM

Sad when the most exciting part of the race was the restart after the safety car laps...and even that was orchestrated by letting the back-markers pass the safety car so the 'real' race cars could resume their parade.
PS - the restart did not result in any position changes ??????
yawn
Roman did not fail to disappoint.

the taxi-cab of tomorrow [nastycar standard body metal]
gets stickers to resemble the ford chevy or toy car it represents
mostly the motor is from the brand ONLY

BRAKES REAR END are standard parts all cars use as are the frame and other bits
inc all the sheet metal

there is very little ford or chevy parts used outside the motors

rfuerst911sc 05-12-2019 08:51 AM

Ferrari brings a new engine package in hopes of closing the gap to Mercedes and ends up fourth and fifth . When do heads start rolling ?

It's just as sad that the most interesting aspect of all of Formula 1 racing is in the display of money and technology down to the last very last atom, and the least interesting is the time that the cars are on track for the race that all those millions were spent preparing for...

CurtEgerer 05-12-2019 09:15 AM

That's an interesting observation. If they didn't go out on track at all, it wouldn't hurt the overall show that much. The amazement is truly in the technology and engineering.

I've watch f1 for many years n each year seems to get worse, don't get it..

Unless you’re Mercedes. Their domination is impressive. Can they finish 1 - 2 every race?

oldE 05-12-2019 10:38 AM

I think the car's potentials are closer than it appears. The difference is in the ability to "turn on "the tires.
Mercedes is able to do it. Ferrari is not. At Red Bull. Max can do it, Pierre cannot.
Also, Ferrari need to tap into the Pelican Brain Trust regarding when to pit drivers for new rubber or swap position on track. They let Vettel hold up Leclerc for too many laps while he was handicapped by flat spotted tires, then compounded the error by letting Leclerc hold up his teammate when Vettel was faster.
Can't their strategists follow a simple following time differential?
I'm glad the FIA has Mercedes' mailing address, so they can just send them the trophies for this season.

There's no better way to get all the other teams to agree on something than to have one team dominate. Williams, Ferrari, and McLaren have all had dominant periods. Look where they are now.

I think there is something to this. Ferrari have a very good car. Red Bull have a very good car. Mercedes have a very good car and a very good team. No matter where they end FP1, FP2, or FP3, they are always there for qualifying and the race. They run their program and get their cars set up. I'm sure their program is focused on optimizing tire performance based on the data they collect from practice. During the race, they never make obvious mistakes. They respond when they need to, but don't fall for fake outs. They don't spend too long making decisions.

chapo 05-12-2019 04:15 PM

Indycar race was a lot of fun, lots of passing and strategy with the rain coming. Recorded the F1 race but see no reason to watch it.

I hate to say it, because Im pulling for Ferrari and am sick of Mercedes’ domination, but I see no reason why Mercedes won’t continue to finish 1-2 every race this year, unless they break down or crash somehow. They are just making this look too easy.

It’s super annoying to me. The races are predictable and boring.

chapo 05-12-2019 08:31 PM

I wasted my time watching qualifying, won’t do that again. F1 is as bad or worse than NASCAR

herr_oberst 05-12-2019 08:41 PM

Remember when Williams were bringing engineering solutions to F1 that were so far ahead of the rest of the grid that they were banned?

It doesn't look like there is/was anything wrong with Kubica's car:

Kubica had initially stated that he believes there is something wrong his chassis compared to Russell’s. However, when the latter was handed Kubica’s chassis for the Spanish GP, he still beat him.

This has led to reports that Kubica’s days with Williams could be numbered.

That was an incredible race. Only caught the end of it, when the rain set in. Pagenaud's run on Dixon was great to watch.

Teams are still doing it today.

Take the ducts on 2014 Mercedes that were drawing air in at the rear wing and transferring it to the front wing through the entire chassis of the car, down through the front wing supports, etc, then exiting in specific places in the wing structure to reduce drag.

I would hate for RK to be knowingly putting fake news out there. He has always been a straight shooter so this would really hurt his reputation.

If he is realizing he cannot drive an F1 car the way he thought he could, that would be a huge blow.

CurtEgerer 05-14-2019 03:18 PM

via GP247:

(Gordon) Murray still follows Formula One, and was at the Bahrain Grand Prix, but feels it needs to do “something fundamental” to create more excitement and better racing.

“They really have to,” he said. “It´s a drivers´ championship first and foremost.”

Murray would like to see less downforce, with tiny wings front and back, and more design freedom in the centre of the car. “We just had so much fun in the days when you could think of an idea, build the parts the next week and go a second and a half a lap quicker at the next grand prix,” he said.

“These days its hundreds and hundreds of hours in the wind tunnel and then a tiny little front wing change and you find two-tenths of a second. I find that really difficult to get excited about.”
