Rusty garage

I had the garage door dude in today for some r and m on the openers. He told me the back, 3rd garage had a lot of rust in it. He said it was due to pool chemicals stored in it. It is the garage Porsche was going to call home. I had no idea!!! Anybody ever heard of this issue?

If they are oxidizers, then sure!

I live in Florida now and I have a pool. I stored a can of turpentine and a can of acitone in a cabinet along with pool chemicals in my garage. Within a year the cans rusted out from the bottom also, the door hinges rusted out. This never happened to these cans when I lived on long island and I stored them in the garage. My long island home did not have a pool so I guess there is some truth to it. I just though it was the Florida heat and humidity.

Chlorine is a strong oxidizer. Yes, chlorine vapor will rust your stuff. I would not have anything I cared for stored with chlorine.

I stopped in to talk to the tech at our water treatment plant. The stuff in the room where the chlorinator is is all corroded and the concrete floor is eaten away.

Whatever you do...DO NOT put a 914 in there!

Do not store pool chems in the house. We keep them in a plastic deckbox by the pool. Leave scissors or a knife in there, and it's rusted junk in a week or 2.

Will there be residuals in the garage after I get the chemicals out. Do I need to air it out for a while or is there something else I should do to get rid of whatever is left.

You could probably put some Soda ash or baking soda in there (sprinkle it around) for a week or two with the doors closed up and it might deal with the residuals.

The issue is going to be that your climate is so humid.

I would think that ____ soda will only help if the issue is an acidic chemical. Is chlorine acidic? Otherwise, adding a base will only add a new issue. If that's the case, then I would think maybe a rinse or wash where possible and lots of air, but that's just my WAG.

Try adding a dehumidifier first.
I always run one in my garage, rust loves moisture.

Might work but those are all on the same side of the ph scale. I'd store my bbq charcoal out there. Open, of course.

No chlorine. Salt water pool. I’m airing it out and I’ve got a week before I huivevto put Porsche (or another car) in it.

Then it might have been muriatic acid. The vapors transcend the container. Notice pool chemicals are kept away from each other in stores.
