They are great dogs in a 1 on 1 situation, but unpredictable around small children, and small dogs. They are possesive to a fault...which means anyone/anything perceived as a threat must be eliminated, and not just nipped like most other dog breeds do. I think the dog park would be out of the question, as well as walking around other dogs.

I am not a fan of Pitts at all, and don't enjoy petting them, or even looking at them, I always have that unsure thought in the back of my head that says this dog could rip my throat out for no apparent reason....which keeps me away from them, as i'm sure they can sense my unease, which makes it an unsafe situation for both of us.

Summary; They are good dogs until they aren't !

If you decide to pursue, see if the rescue will let you meet with the other dogs - one at a time - to check compatibility. If they demur that’s telling.

Cane corsos are incredibly protective. Great dogs with the right owners, just very protective. Did I mention they are protective? If you have a cleaner or anyone else that doesn’t live there that could enter your house while you aren’t there I’d think twice.

Pit bulls have a really, really bad reputation because the breed has earned it.
Not every dog in the breed, but overall. Yes.

Retrievers have NOT earned that same reputation.
Retrievers are classified as "soft mouth" dogs.
Even if a retriever bit someone (which I have not personally heard of), odds are they would not latch down so tight it would take a baseball bat or a bullet to get them to let go without ripping off a considerable amount of flesh.

No, the retrievers i have had the pleasure of interacting with might play and grab and rough-house a little, but I seriously doubt any of them would ever rip my face completely off or tear my throat or kill my kids in a similar fashion.

Please don't...not worth the risks. Fact is....dawgs will be dawgs. The ankle biters might start something....full stop :(.

All dogs have the ability to attack. Pretty much all of them can injure or kill a child.

LOL my old dachshund was afraid to bite the food in his dish most of the time.
But if Chihuahuas were as big and strong as PBs I'd be nervous around them ;)

Choc, I am coming to that very conclusion. Friend has some lab puppies which are due in a couple weeks so I may just end up waiting and taking a runt female when they're old enough. No papers but known lab parents.

My daughter adopted a two year old pit bull "mix" when she was in high school. She was sweet at first, BUT the most destructive dog I've even known. I was patient and worked with her for about six months solid, but she was untrainable. She destroyed a mahogany front door, several pieces of furniture, and anything stuffed.

After two years of canine friendship, she suddenly and viciously attacked our aging and arthritic French mastif. Unprovoked. Luckily, a few weeks later she tore both ACL's chasing a squirrel. $8,000 and three months rehab???...I don't think so.

Here's what my home owners insurance "Prohibited Dogs List" says. It's also spelled out in a separate contract.

1. Pit Bull breeds, including Staffordshire Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier (“Amstaff”), Miniature Staffordshire Terrier, American Bulldog, or any mixed breed determined to have the pit terrier or pit fighting dog ancestry

Went through this a few years ago. I've owned Chow's and Chow mix"s since I was @20 years old. Unfortunately my homeowner's insurance wouldn't cover me anymore. My Chow was in the last part of his life, finally passing about the time before renewing my insurance.

I really had no choice, after some time I bought a rough coat Collie puppy..........

My GF moved in a few months ago and she has two Rottie's. It took forever to find a insurance company that would cover us just because of the Rott's. We ended up going with State Farm, the only company that would even discuss it. Of course for higher rate.

I also live way out in the sticks on a cattle ranch, no kids, and no neighbors within two miles. And we were still stiffed. I can't imagine I'd ever have gotten insured if they were pitts.

I won't get into my opinion on fighting dogs. They are genetically designed to do what they do and they do it very well. Exactly how we made them to be over generations of careful breeding. I don't think folks realize just how easy it is to genetically create domestic animals to bring out the best instincts. You just cull the wimps and keep the tough ones, breed it to another tough one, or back to its mother or father and rise wash repeat. You don't even have to train that. Just keep breeding them.-WW

My neighbors breed Karelians. Got to play with the last litter. At eight weeks one wanted to eat me. Three wandered off and had zero interest in any human. One wanted to just pee on everything. One little girl curled up in my lap and went to sleep as I rubbed her belly.

I think she would have been a good pet. The rest are causing someone migraines somewhere.
