I don't know who made the call to let Brady go, but that person most definitely is not a genius.

The patriots were maxxed out on the salary cap and could not afford to pay Brady what he wanted. They spent way too much to build a team that could win superbowls and it did, but eventually the time came to pay the piper. Borrowed money from this year to pay for last year and the year before and so on. Balloon payments in contracts.

They offered Brady what they could but it wasn't enough. I heard they asked him to take another pay cut so they could keep decent players around him. Not verified.
He did just that last time around, but this time he said nope.
