Craigslist has started charging $5 per car add, which isn't a problem, but I have noticed there are FAR fewer car adds than there used to be on that site. The CL clientele are generally a rougher bunch on average.

Autotrader was a turd for quite awhile but has become more competent recently. I use it more than cars.com now and never go to carguru. I'd imagine others see it differently.

Depends on the car. If I am looking for a specific brand and model I will look on Forums of that brand and model.
I also use Autotrader and used to use CL before it started to charge.

I recently purchased a used Volvo XC90 using CarGurus . I thought the variety of vehicles it provided was good and the data about the vehicles was accurate . I contacted several dealerships about Volvo's they had listed and all of them responded in a timely manner. I would use them again .

Each site will have different cars, so it’s all a matter of how thorough you want to be. For private party sales Craigslist is still the best, despite the scammers. For enthusiast cars checking the forums is a good bet, and BaT is fun but often times cars go for top dollar there. Also EBay tends to have a good selection of interesting stuff.

Not looking, so I don't go to 'em. But my curiosity was aroused a bit. Nobody bothers with ebay now? If not, why?

Relevent thread.
I listed my Focus RS on Craigslist and haven't had much action on it, maybe I'm asking too much, idk. I was thinking about ebay as well, but have never sold a car through them (just garage sale stuff).

I tend to have better luck selling cheaper cars on Craigslist, and more expensive cars on EBay.

Relevant thread as well as we need to sell our Macan S in 5 weeks to make room for an Audi RS3. Forgot about Ebay, until reading this thread.

Make SURE you appreciate the fee you will pay eBay if your car sells.

Facebook market place. Just sold my 13 370z there
Took about 2 weeks and got what I wanted for it. Seems less scammers and yahoos trying to trade For worthless junk. Plus you can look a their profile When they message you to get an idea of who you're dealing with

Depends on what you’re buying or selling. The following input is based on experience in more commoditized everyday drivers. If we’re talking about classic air cooled Porsche’s it does t apply...
Of the major third parties CarGurus has done a good job capturing a large volume of buyers. They cracked the SEO game early and made waves capturing traffic that historically would’ve gone to AutoTrader or Cars.com. Do know that they base their display logic based on how your vehicle is priced compared to the market. So, if you’re priced above the general market you risk not showing high in results or getting flagged as a bad deal. Where I am there’s been a decline in effectiveness posting on Craigslist unless you have a car priced under $15k. We’re seeing a shift away from Craigslist towards Facebook Marketplace. Like CL, FB Marketplace excels with its ability to provide more instant communication via messenger. There’s also merit to seeing a bit about the person inquiring. While not guaranteed, I’ve been surprised to see that interested parties are connected in some way to someone I know. As a result there can be opportunity to vet folks inquiring. Regardless of where you list there are some best practices that should be followed. Take great pictures and lots of them. One of the largest drivers of purchase intent is photo engagement. Without pictures you won’t get eyes on your listing. Thoroughly describe the car including premium options. It’s a good practice to include the new premium for each respective option/package. It’s important to build a case for why your car should be considered, and where applicable, demand more $$ than the other similar cars posted. Always post a price. |

To me, EBAY seems to be cars that are way overpriced in an attempt to see what the market will pay, hoping for a bidding war....also steep fees depending on the selling price.
BAT (bring a trailer) has some really nice cars that are usually low milegae, primo examples of desireable models...more special interest garage kept cars rather than commuters. |

I think I want a Subaru Outback, priced below 15k. Years ago, I used autotrader, cars.comm, etc., and am not on faceplant, sooo mebbe I'll search Clist....just not likely with my criteria and location.
Almost everything on cargurus seems to be dealer though... Anybody got an Outback ![]() |

When I was a dealer I sold many of my cars on EBay, but never actually officially sold a car on EBay. It was just a means to advertise and we completed the sale outside of the site. I also never did auctions, only fixed price listings with a best offer option. So basically just a classified ad.
