Flushing power steering fluid the easy way.

I just completed this on my brothers truck.
It's a really straight forward way of flushing your power steering fluid!

And it worked perfectly.

I think that he only flushed the reservoir. He also used the wrong oil, '90s GM truck would be DEX/Mercron red ATF.

Why is he afraid to start the engine and do it right? He has so many of the elements of the job there.

Denis, I've always done it with the engine running but I can now confirm this method works perfectly.
The hardest part was getting the low pressure hose off the return pipe.

At 6.30 you can see the fluid is completely "fresh". He topped off the reservoir as the dirty fluid was pumped out.

I wish I saw that yesterday, did the power steering pump on my best friend's wife's car. We got it pretty clean though.

Don't know if I'll try this with my truck but I might. The question that comes to mind is would cycling the ignition on & off several times affect my glow plugs on my old 7.3L in some negative way?

Hey it's dangerous to work on a car that's running!

I have seen the smart boxes go bad on the hmmwv's and they'll default glow plugs on and burn them out. They're the swelling type too! 7.3 is fine. There's a Canadian on youtube that has a idi 7.3 with no working glow plugs, and feeds it "Bill Cosby in a can" ether to get it started.

Interesting. I have always did this by:

1) removing the fluid from the reservoir with a turkey baster,
2) refill it,
3) run the car,
4) turn the wheel left and right,
5) remove the fluid,
6) if looking fresh, refill and stop.
7) If still dirty, go back to step one.

I tend to use one large bottle to be sure. No worries about messing up hoses.
